Terry Francona said before today’s game against the Brewers that Justin Masterson will likely start on Tuesday and Bartolo Colon on Wednesday against the Royals at Fenway Park.
Masterson after his start on Tuesday will be sent back to Double-A Portland, where he has struggled since making his major league debut against the Angels on April 24 at Fenway. Masterson went six innings in that game, allowing only one run on two hits and 4 walks before Boston’s bullpen turned it into a 6-4 loss. In 19 1/3 innings with Portland since that start, Masterson has allowed 16 earned runs on 23 hits and 11 walks.
Masterson and Colon are needed in Boston with Clay Buchholz on the disabled list with a broken finger nail and Daisuske Matsuzaka’s next start pushed to Thursday by last Friday’s rainout.
