A comment posted by DBoisver in the recent “Colvin Can’t Hang On” entry got me thinking:
You're the General Manager of an NFL team, and you have two standout players facing free agency. One is a shutdown cornerback who has proven himself as a clutch performer, that rare breed who actually raises his level of play in the post-season? He has 5-career playoff picks in 14-games, 3 of which have been returned for touchdowns, which ties him with the Raiders Willie Brown for the most in NFL history.
Compare and contrast that to Mr. Regular Season. Not to demean this future Hall-of-Famer receiver's accomplishments, but these were his playoff stats last year: 7-receptions, 94-yards and 1-TD in 3-games. Including those, his playoff numbers stand at 42-receptions, 817-yards and 10-TD’s in 11-games, an average of nearly 4-catches, 74-yards and 1-TD per contest. Good, but certainly not worthy of his typical regular season totals when healthy.
Those figures get less imposing when you subtract his one truly monster playoff performance: a 9-catch, 188-yard, 2-TD performance vs. the hapless Rams defense in 2000. Subtract that superb effort, and you have a 3-catch, 63-yard, 1-TD per playoff game performer. Good, but far from great. Oh yeah…one more thing. The receiver just turned 31-years old while the cornerback is 4-years younger.
So I ask you, Patriots fans...why are most of you so eager to retain an older guy who fares worse in the playoffs than the regular season, and who plays a less valuable position on the field than the younger, more clutch performer? Why does most of Patriots Nation have no problem with retaining Randy Moss while letting Asante Samuel walk away?

B/c the stiff dropped an interception in the Super Bowl that any top-paid cornerback would have caugt to clinch an undefeated season..."Get Paid" his tatoo reads...get lost you choker.
Sincerely,
Still not over the Super Bowl

1. Moss probably took a discount
2. Moss opens the field for everybody else
3. Moss would have had more catches in the superbowl had Brady had more damn time to throw the dam ball!
4. Ty Law's coming back!

3)Brady had plenty of time in the Jaguars game, and Moss only made one catch.
4)While I love Ty Law, the last thing this defense needs is another old guy. Law with Asante Samuel...Yes! With Randall Gay and Ellis Hobbs...HELL NO!
2)Your best point. And you forgot to mention, "keeps Brady happy"...let's not understimate that.
Now, as for Thunder, check out those playoff stats again and tell me who the choker is? And yes, I still can't talk about the Super Bowl (unless I have to for work) without getting sick to my stomach.

Comes down to economics in the salary cap NFL... Samuel will cost at least 2-3 mil more per season plus wants a big signing bonus. Moss will probably sign a deal that exposes the Pats for a little more modest salary and for a few less years. Sign Samuel and you can't keep Moss or do much else in free agency- sign Moss and you can then try to sign some lower-tier CBs or LBs.
All other things being equal, yes, CB would be very valuable to the Pats and (if his attitude didn't stink) they should try to keep Samuel but don't underestimate the effect that no Stallworth will have on the offense either. Fail to keep Moss and the Pats' receivers are VERY average with just Welker returning from this season. I think Stallworth did a little bit of the opening up of the field for the other receivers due to his speed. They need to sign themselves (or draft one) a new speed guy to replace Stallworth or I'll bet Moss won't come close to duplicating his numbers of last season.

Oh, I know WHY they're doing it. I question the wisdom of it.
Is it really wiser to spend money on an older wide receiver who's never won anything and then bring in a CB who won't be as good. Isn't it better to sign the great CB and bring in a lesser WR?
And why CAN'T they sign both Moss and Samuel? The Moss deal is done...As I sadi, take the Colvin and Stallworth savings, trade down the draft pick, get creative on your deal with Samuel and you've probably got enough room.
And doesn't the cap ceiling go up this year, too?

Hey DB...just read on ProFootballTalk.com that Samuel visited the Eagles, will be made available to the media later today, and that a deal may be done.
If all this is true, is he worth the money? LOL!

No - I will not modify my prior statements just because Asante is visiting the Eagles. 10 mil is an awful lot of dough and will almost certainly upset Lito Sheppard to the point they would either have to re-do Lito's deal or trade him (maybe to the Pats???)
However - if they can satisfy Lito that would make quite the CB duo for the Birds. I just think the 10 mil creates an awful lot of headaches with your current salary structure AND makes it tougher to do some of the other things they would like to do/need to do (like another WR).
Believe it or not the Eagles and Pats have some similar issues to deal with although both have proven to usually be correct when setting their limit of how much a player is worth and not going over so it will be interesting to see how Samuel does should he don the midnight green. We need SOMETHING to get excited about after last year's 8-8 record and seeing one of our rivals upset the Pats in the SB...
One thing to remember, though, this same schtick was done back when the Eagles had LeCharles Bentley (Center from the Saints at the time) in to simply "finalize" the deal and he ended up backing out to sign w/ the Browns (and ended up with a career-threatening injury shortly thereafter).

Teddy.
I agree with you about Samuel being probably the better choice to re-sign. Although I think Moss' presence MADE Welker's phenomenal season.
Hopefully, Pats trade for Lito Sheppard AND re-sign Moss (which I hear is in the works)then the point is moot.

All of them choked. Especially someone who claims to be the best at his position (Asante). That said, I have no problem with Asante leaving for more money. He never claimed it was about anything other than the money and he never made any stupid statements (thus far) like "I need to feed my family". This is America and I have no problem with someone going for more, as long as they admit it. All the best to him. (He still should have caught that ball Ted).

Could he have caught that ball? Yeah, he's made tougher plays, including that pick in the Chargers game. Should he have? Well, it was a leaping catch on the sidelines in which it's questionable whether he'd have gotten his feet inbounds anyway (not that I've seen it since...I refuse to watch replays of the game!) I'd have been much more upset if it hit him right in the numbers and he dropped it.
Guess that's all water under the bridge now. What did you think of the money? 6-years, 57-mil, only 20-mil guaranteed...kind of a bargain when you consider what Clements got, wouldn't you say? Aren't you upset that an aging Patriots defense didn't make a better and earlier bid to keep him?
At what point whill everyone else start to realize that you can't continue to bleed players who know how to win, regardless of how close they are to being washed up? Was McGinest past his prime? Sure. Vinatieri? Hell yeah. But damn, I'd have loved to have Willie that day in Indy and Adam around to attempt that FG this year. I bet McGinest would have figured out a way to stop Dallas Clark. And I wonder if Belichick would have been so quick to go for it on 4th and a mile if he had Vinatieri instead of Gostkowski.
LK, I think your scenario is the best case at this point, though I've read Lito might be used to acquire Larry Fitzgerald from Arizona. Plus, he's going to cost something to bring here.
I can't shake this feeling we're witnessing the slow demise of a dynasty.

I'm also curious how much "cheaper" than Samuel signing Moss will be. Bet it won't be by much.
And 23-TD's aside, I still have some problems with "Mr. Horseplay" during the playoff bye week. Perhaps if he'd have confined his horse play to Foxboro, he'd have had a few more catches, no?
Oh, and one more thing on Lito Sheppard. Check out the number of games played the last 3-years: 10, 13, 11. Not exactly an ironman. And nowhere near Asante's class as a cover corner.

Now that I see the details I think this is a good move for the Eagles as they have lots of young QBs and receivers in their division and their #1 problem last year was not being able to get the defense off the field. Had it been a longer deal or higher AVG salary I'd have said they were overpaying but seeing what $$$ some other guys are getting I think it's not a bad deal at all as long as they aren't done...
Lito is pretty good but as Teddy says he's kind of fragile. I'd be OK with keeping him an Eagle and building a dominant secondary in Philadelphia but I'd also be ok with trading him away as he will most likely resent Asante's contract...
All of the teams making moves are teams not re-signing their "own" (of course most of them didn't have any quality free agents of their own). I'll bet all of the real star players are gone quickly since so many guys got tagged. Guys like Randall Gay will be signed within a week I'll bet.
