For what it's worth; I had the pleasure of interviewing Peter Gammons this morning as part of the radio show I do. And the man they call "The Commissioner" believes a Johan Santana deal is becoming less likely by the day.
Gammons thinks it more probable that Santana opens the year with the Twins because they won't be able to get enough out of the Red Sox and Yankees to make trading their ace worthwhile. He believes Theo Epstein and Brian Cashman have succeeded in changing their respective organization's philosophy to the point where ownership no longer thinks it wise to trade the farm for high priced talent in every case.
Does that mean Santana won't be traded before the season starts, or even at the trade deadline? No, but Gammons' is just the latest voice in a growing chorus singing a tune about the prospective trade's demise.
What do you think gang...is the deal dead? If you think it will happen, do you see Santana going to the Red Sox or Yankees? Or is there another team out there you believe will eventually swoop in and pay the Twins asking price?

Gammons has said all along that he doesn't think the Twins will trade Santana before the season. He is of the belief that the Twins could get a similar offer or better by the trade deadline. I say no way. MLB GM's know that The Twins will have their backs against the wall. Let's hope Theo and Co. make it happen soon so we can watch the NBA Championship in June in peace.

Steinbrenner Junior keeps flapping his gums about a trade. I read where he said yesterday that he leans toward doing the trade now. I think the Twins still trade him. Even with Son of George playing hard to get the Yankees are the most logical landing place. Minnesota is just using the Sox to drive up the price.

Minnesota really does need to make a deal but I am wondering how they are thinking... The fans will see a trade of Santana as "throwing in the towel" on 2008 but, at the same time, keeping Santana to go with Liriano (if healthy) gives you a great 1-2 punch but the rest of their rotation and lineup is not up to the standards of the other good AL teams (Boston, New York, LA Angels, Detroit) and for the Twins to make the playoffs they have to beat out at least one of those teams. I think the Twins can be highly competitive but just don't have enough to get by those other teams. With a new ballpark on the way, though, I think they have to play any possible trade up just as they are and make it seem like they are very reluctant to trade him- just to keep the fans happy- even if they are happy with offer(s) they've already received.
Should be very interesting to follow. I'd say it's pretty much about a 30% chance he stays with the Twins, 35% chance he goes to the Yanks, 30% he goes to the Sox, and about 5% chance someone else swoops in with a better offer. I do think he will either be traded before the season or not at all- unless the Twins are far out of the race...

An interesting take, DB. If Liriano is healthy, they really could be a force and playoff team. That's why I think if they don't trade him before the season starts, they can't do it at the trade deadline, or risk looking really bad.
That's why I believe a trade will be made by the end of spring training.

But there line up is nuts man. What about redmand, lil punto,my main man Watkins, cmon bro. that's a good line up man.the only spot they gotta fill is tori hunter. And there pitching is nice man. That team is gonna be HOt this year. remember you heard it here first, bro.
