UML Men's Basketball: Notes

One run can change a basketball game for better or worse. Pace University came up with that run yesterday in a three-point win against UMass Lowell.

“Kevin Carr his a jumper with 10 minutes to go to put us up five and we went eight possessions in a row without scoring,” UML head coach Ken Barer said. “Missed shots. Turnovers. Missed shots. Turnovers. Eight possessions in a row. Right in the middle of the second half.”

Five missed shots and two turnovers later, the Setters were up four points and they never trailed again.

Numerology

25 - Pace senior guard Ryan Williams piled up 25 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 4-of-10 from behind the three-point arch. He was made 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

18 - UML took 18 less free throws than Pace in a game decided by three points. The Setters were 16-of-21 from the charity stripe, while the River Hawks were 2-of-3.

41 - Pace hauled down 41 rebounds to UML’s 26.

14 - The River Hawks had 14 less turnovers than they did in Tuesday’s loss to Merrimack. UML shot 54.4 percent from field against the Warriors but turned the ball over 27 times. Pace forced the River Hawks into just 13 turnovers.

Lineup tweaks

The River Hawks started Kevin Carr, Craig Heatherly, Michael Gore, Victor Colon, and freshman Max Kerman against Pace.

It was the first start of the season for Gore, who responded with a career-high 14 points. Sophomore center Ali Kanaan did not start for the first time this season. Kanaan led UML with six rebounds, but did not score in 12 minutes of action.

Senior forward Jerreh Saidybah played three minutes in the first half. Saidybah is still working his way back from knee surgery during the preseason. Barer said he is trying to put Saidybah in situations where he can be productive, keeping in mind that he is not all the way back physically.

Still Arnette’s House

Brandon Arnette, who graduated with River Hawks assistant coach Necus Mayne in 2006, returned to Costello Gymnasium as an assistant coach for Pace University. Arnette was a 1,000 point scorer, and was on the NE-10 regular season and tournament championship teams in 2003 and 2004. The River Hawks were 95-31 during that four-year span.

Arnette is now in his second year as an assistant with the Setters.
