Lost in the Red Sox and Patriots craziness is an amazing story developing over at The Heights.
Boston College is the 2nd ranked team in NCAA Football, a lofty perch the Eagles never soared to even in the golden days of Doug Flutie. They have a quarterback, Matt Ryan, who might very well win the Heisman Trophy. And if they win out, they’re very likely to play in the BCS title game.
A lot of people probably missed, or stopped clicking over to (that would be me), last night’s game at Virginia Tech, figuring BC was done when facing a 10-0 deficit in the final minutes of a sloppily played contest, held in the middle of a rain storm. However, I’ll bet a lot of you (me included) were scrambling for the clicker when the blurb came on during the Sox game that the Eagles has won 14-10.
I clicked over the ESPN just in time to catch the beginning of SportsCenter. What I saw was Ryan channeling Flutie Magic and scrambling all over the wet turf to toss a pair of late game TD’s. An improbable onside kick recovery was sandwiched between the scores, giving it all a feel of one of those games we’ll be talking about decades from now.
Too bad it kind of got lost in the shuffle.
So what do you think, gang? Do the Eagles really have a chance at the National Championship? Will Ryan win the Heisman? And with such a surprisingly strong anti-BC sentiment out there, is this something the entire region can rally behind?

Look at BC's schedule - the ACC is not very good this year (FSU and Miami are well below where they've been in the past and usually there is a team like Maryland, Virginia, or Clemson that joins VT as a "good" team for a year or so like Wake Forest did last year). Should they go undefeated they'll probably play in the BCS title game- and get killed by Ohio State, Oklahoma, LSU, or whomever they would have to play.
I just don't see much of a "team" at BC- great quarterback but really not that much of a supporting cast for a supposed #2 team in the country. My bet is they will lose at least 1 game during the stretch run and, once it happens, they'll fall to #10 or lower with no shot at getting back up there...
Does Ryan have a shot at the Heisman? NO WAY. If it goes to a QB it'll probably be Tebow of Florida. Should they vote for a RB it will probably go to McFadden of Arkansas. There's also a groundswell for Glenn Dorsey of LSU who is probably the best player in college even if he's a defensive lineman. Ryan is a very good player but you need to be from the SEC, Big 10, Big 12, or PAC-10 to win the Heisman unless you have stats that simply blow everyone in the country away and you've played ranked teams all season which BC simply has not. The only unbeaten team with a softer schedule is Hawaii and their QB Brennan probably has a better shot at the Heisman than Ryan does...

"Can You Believe It" is a common phrase and expression around here these days. That of course is refering to the RedSox winning it all in 2004, but now when I say "Can You Believe It" I am refering to a truly AMAZING time in Boston sports. The RedSox about to win their second World Series Title in a matter of four years. The Patriots off to a Domination record start in more ways than one and a Celtics team with so much potential. All this being true and the Eageles having a GOOD Team that YES I Can Belive it. This is the year it seems for all New England sports teams to have A YEAR TO REMEMBER!
