A-Rod to Stay a Yankee?

It’s been widely believed (and widely hoped for on this site) that Alex Rodriguez would opt out of his contract with the New York Yankees and test the free agency waters at the conclusion of the World Series. However, a source close to the soon-to-be AL MVP tells TheSunBlog he’s “betting on the 3rd baseman staying with the Yankees.”

The Yanks have made it known they won’t offer a deal should Rodriguez opt out of his contract, which the Texas Rangers pay a large portion of. New York had hoped to work out an extension before A-Rod exercised his out clause and began shopping his services to the rest of the league.

Agent Scott Boras is throwing around numbers in the $30-million a year for 10-years neighborhood. For the Yankees to get Rodriguez’ signature on an extension, they’d likely have to find a way to balance things out since they’re currently paying much less than that on the 10-years, $250-million deal A-Rod signed with Texas.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Any truth to the rumor that he may be going to the Marlins Teddy?

Teddy P.:

No confirmation of that rumor...just that "he'd bet on staying with the Yankees."

It's an interesting possibility, one that few people have thought of. It makes sense on many levels as A-Rod grew up in Miami, played high school ball there and agreed to go to the University of Miami before turning pro instead. Rodriguez' wife is also from there, so that's another thing working in the Marlins favor.

However, I just can't see that team shelling out the kind of long-term commitment it will take to get Rodriguez back home. The Marlins are a notoriously cheap franchise with lousy attendance despite winning two World Seires. So unless there's a total change of philosophy, I can't see it happening.

Then again, maybe they're thinking they can boost attendance by bringing a hometown legend back to chase Barry Bonds' home run record.

It should all play out pretty soon!

Let him stay in NY- what have the Yankees (or any team for that matter) ever won while this guy is on their team?? While he has as much natural talent as anyone in baseball his postseason numbers, at this point, cannot be overlooked. When the pressure is on he just doesn't come through. I would absolutely NOT want to see this guy play for Boston- EVER and I worry that if he opts out the non-Theo faction of the Red Sox will start courting him. Take the $30+ (or whatver) million and get yourself a decent third baseman (like Lowell) or a couple of pitchers but don't spend it all on A-Rod- he just hasn't proven he's worth even the $25 mil he's getting now...

I know I truly speak for the Majority for RedSox Nation when I say I would be GREATLY upset, frustrated and disappointed if A-Rod comes to Boston. Theo and the Trio simply stated NEED to re sign Mike (theres a lot to like about) Lowell... Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.

NO one can deny A-Rod's natural talent and great baseball ability. This being said there is NO part of me that wants A-Rod to come to Boston! It's not just the money and not even that I am a Diehard RedSox fan that I feel this way. I want Good Baseball players with Class on and off the field. I know I speak for most of RedSox nation by saying this.
