Not to ignore the Asante Samuel situation…feel free to chime in here, but at this point there’s really nothing new to report except the cornerback and the Patriots were unable to reach agreement on a long-term deal. No surprise there, as we’ve been discussing and predicting the situation will likely get ugly. The next step is seeing if Samuel will accept the franchise offer and show to camp Friday. The guessing here; don’t bet on it unless he gets a guarantee that he won’t be franchised again in 2008.
Now then, the real NFL drama of the day; a grand jury indicts Michael Vick on various conspiracy charges involving dog fighting. (Thanks to our friends over at Deadspin.com for the photo)
While ProFootballTalk.com (a great source to recap all the developments as they’ve unfolded) is reporting that Nike will eventually drop the Falcons Quarterback as a spokesman despite standing behind him not too long ago, the NFL and the Falcons have issued statements that basically say nothing except “we’re going to let the legal system play out before deciding what steps to take.” As we all know by now, everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty…everyone deserves a fair trial…yada-yada-yada….Can I just say something without sounding like the insensitive jerk I am?
WHAT A FREAKIN’ MORON!!!
You have to possess the IQ of a piece of luggage to be a multi-million dollar athlete with everything to lose and nothing to gain and still let yourself get involved in something like this. Even in the best case scenario where Vick has nothing to do with the dog fighting, how on earth can he be stupid enough to allow it to happen on his property? Even if he didn’t know what was going on, how on earth can he be stupid enough to let scumbags like the people involved in dog fighting live on his property?
Many people, yours truly included, believe he’s one of the most overrated players in the history of the league. The funny thing is, the inevitable pressure from animal right’s groups is what will finally do what so many pass rushers couldn’t; sack Michael Vick for good.
OK, enough from me. What do you think? Guilty or innocent? Done as an NFL player? Able to bounce back?

What an idiot. I don't even like dogs but that stuff that was going on there was just gross. I think he's done with the Falcons after this but someone will give him a chance....Oakland needs someone to take Jamarcus Russell under their wing.

Vick is definitely both overrated and an idiot but right up there in the idiot category would be the GM of the Falcons who traded away Matt Schaub to the Texans leaving absolutely nothing behind Vick but Joey Harrington???!!!?!
The Raiders will always take a chance on guys who have worn out their welcome everywhere else in the NFL so that would be a likely landing place. I can't see anyone else bothering with the guy after something like this- maybe if they wanted to try to convert him to a running back or a Kordell Stewart-type but NOT as a starting NFL QB.

What a jackass?!?! He was living the dream. He was a mediocre QB who was lucky enough to get a big contract and huge endorsement deals all because of the hype about him coming out of college. This just makes you appreciate #12 here in New England even more. The only time you here about his off-field activities is when he's dating some new super model!!

Brady is in a totally different league than Vick, on the field and off. The contrast was never more evident than last year, when Vick was busy bitching about his receivers dropping balls and giving Atlanta fans the finger. Brady, meanwhile, kept talking about how HE had to improve and throw the ball better, not his receivers.
You're right...we are very lucky #12 is on our side. And yeah, he's dating supermodels and actresses, while Vick is fighting bitches...LOL!

You can't say 'ol #12 has totally avoided the bad press though- there is that thing with his ex-girlfriend pregnant with his child right about the time he was seen jetsetting with his new girlfriend. Not in the Vick category but not exactly the kind of thing you want your kids emulating some day either...

If Michael Vick is playing in the NFL in the 07 season its a disgrace! No team (including the Falcons) should allow him to be a part of their team. We can only hope that Vick fades away from pro sports into nowhere.

If what is being alleged is true, the only football Vick should be playing is in a real-life version of "The Longest Yard"- football in prison!

I get a kick out of Nike. They dump Vick's new sneaker because of the inhumane treatment of animals. Of course, they don't say anything about the inhumane treatment of the human beings who make their sneakers in sweat shops.

While I agree with most of the comments posted on this site, especially surrounding Vick's Idiocy surrounding his involvement with the dog fighting scandal, etc... but wouldn't you think the FBI and all these other agencies can put the millions of dollars they are spending into investigating things like say, murders, rapists, organized crimes, etc, etc. I tend to think that people in the media are going over board with this thing!!!

Want to post something about the Special Olympics so you can go after the handicapped, too? LOL!!!!

Vick is so high-profile and the case is now so high-profile that the feds HAVE to throw everything they have into it because the public uproar if he gets off without a trial just because he's famous would be deafening. Would maybe rival the reaction when OJ was found innocent...
Of course the media is going overboard... Any time a celeb (sports or entertainment) does anything wrong the media goes nuts- I think it sometimes make Joe Average happier with their own life to see something like this happen to a celebrity so they will read every word written about it. Why else would those Supermarket "rags" sell so many papers every week?
