Sox Hunting Helton?

The Denver Post (a sister paper to the Lowell Sun) reports the Colorado Rockies are discussing a deal that would send Todd Helton to the Red Sox.

It’s still not known exactly what the Rockies are seeking in return, but the names Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen are mentioned in the article, which you can read here. It’s also believed Colorado is willing to eat a portion of the 6-years, $91-million remaining on the 33-year old 1st Baseman’s contract, and that Helton would consider waiving his no-trade clause. Reports out of Boston have Sox management downplaying the possibility of a deal.

Initially, thought of the sweet-swinging Helton added to a lineup already featuring David Ortiz, Manny Ramirez and J.D. Drew is intriguing. In a perfect world, I’d do the deal in a heartbeat. (Hey…it’s not my money!) However, the career .333-hitter has struggled with injuries the last few seasons, particularly a bad back that has caused a major decline in production.

If the price is Delcarmen and Hansen, with the Rockies willing to pay a good chunk of the tab, I say; go for it! If it’s one of those guys with another top minor league prospect not named Jacoby Ellsbury, I say; go for it again! Throw in Kevin Youkilis as well who, though not mentioned, I’m willing to bet is already part of the discussion.

In my mind, the dialogue ends when the names Papelbon and Lester are brought up. Not that I wouldn’t trade Lester for an established player in his prime, but not for a 33-year old 1st baseman with a history of back issues.

What do you think of a prospective Helton trade? You as intrigued as I am by the possibility, especially if the price is a couple of unproven middle-relievers? Who would you consider including in the deal? Would Helton’s acquisition make the Red Sox clear-cut favorites to win the World Series?

Let’s hear from you Red Sox nation…less than a month till spring training!

Tito's Terrors:

Too much to give up for a fading superstar. I'd give them Youk, ONE of the Hansen-Delcarmen pair only, and one more prospect from the lower minors. That's it. I also read a follow up where Elsbury is part of the discussions. No Way!

Teddy Panos:

Agreed Tito. I read the same thing you did. Ellsbury is a deal-breaker for me because we don't have many highly rated position prospects to begin with, and we're getting a little long in the tooth at a few spots in the lineup.

Our strength appears to be in the young arms department, and with Clay Buchholz (the real closer of the future) maybe ready in a year or so, I see no problem ditching both Hansen and Delcarmen. Unless these two have undergone a major transformation over the winter, I see middle-reliever tattooed on both their foreheads.
