Final Score
Red Sox 2
Orioles 1

Case Closed…: Once again, Terry Francona turned to Jonathan Papelbon to protect a 2-1 lead in the 9th inning. Once again, Papelbon dominated, retiring the Orioles 1-2-3 and punctuating the performance with a strikeout of Kevin Millar. At the moment this kid’s stuff is electric, and for the Sox to have the best chance to win games right now, he needs to stay in this role.

…Or is it?: Which brings us to what’s best in the long run…Papelbon as starter or closer? I heard Peter Gammons on radio this morning, and he made an interesting point; If and when either Schilling, Beckett or Wells goes down with injury (a very good possibility), will you have a better chance of finding a good starter to take their spot or a better chance of Keith Foulke, Mike Timlin or Craig Hanson being able to handle the closer’s role? It’s an interesting dilemma because we, as fans, live day to day. If it’s working, don’t mess with it, and Papelbon as closer is working just fine. Just remember, the longer he stays in this role, the tougher it will be to stretch him out as a starter. That’s why Francona and Theo get paid the big bucks…to make tough decisions like this. We get paid to second-guess!

“Yanking" Our Chain: Are the Yankees done? Or is this just another example of a slow start that they’re sure to overcome. I mean, they have to have a bad year sometime, don’t they? But I wouldn’t bet on it being 2006. For one, they’ve played two pretty good teams in the A’s and Angels. Second, they had a horrific first 2-months last year and still won the division. Finally, the last time they began a season 1-4 was in 1998. Care to guess how many games they won that year? Try 114.

Not a bad start to the season. All the cliches could sum it up to this point. It's a marathon not a sprint, good pitching and defense will beat a powerful offense. This 06' team has a good balance of power and finese in the lineup. In both the pitching and hitting departments, we need to trust the brains of the organization. Not a bad luxury to have quality pitching in that bullpen(besides Seanez and Riske) for Tito. If he doesn't try to over-manage what he has they'll do just fine. As I said before Papelbon is just keeping the seat warm for Hanson, he's the closer of the Red Sox future!
As far as the Yankees go they'll get it back on track they're too powerful of an offensive team to be losing one run ballgames. Like you said their history proves they can pull it back together. But you have to wonder if they have too many superstars in the line-up, if they won't find the right chemistry, how quickly do you think THE BOSS will be to press the panic button and buy new players that will work together. The man has the money to do it and did predict a World Series for the NY faithful...bold, but on paper very much a reality. I hope that they wake up before May 1st just to make things interesting....they have to finish higher than the Devil Rays...how embarassing if they don't.

Don't worry about the slow start to the season. Yanks like to bring it on at a snails pace then jump into high gear towards mid season. It's the same every year. Look for them to win about 115 this year. It'll be tough for them when they have to face the Red Sox in the playoffs, but then again, Red Sox might not be there and nothings made me think anything different to change that. Especially the emergence of Papelbon.

ROG:

Come on they do not have the starting pitching for 115...nobody in the American League will win 115. As a matter of fact I don't see anyone in the National League winning 115 either. Wishful thinking on your part though. Have you been drinking from the same bottle as Mr Steinbrenner? If so please do not drive anywhere until you sober up! What's going to happen once Mr. Mitchell finds out more about these performance enhanced Yankees. Is Sheffield going to cry like Giambi did for sympathy votes and all will be forgotten... or will they both be out of the lineup for too long to help there team get to the post season. Cause we all know that they put team first. NOT!

George HR:

I'm stiff right now ROG. I have been drinking out of the same bottle as GS for 20 years It's been a fun bottle and a fun ride. Okay, maybe not 115, but right around 110. Don't worry about their pitching either, changes are right around the corner. As for the juicing situation, the Yanks are clean. Giambi was set up.

ROG:

Set up by who? He's a cheater like the rest of them that can't fess up that they are cheaters! As a former ballplayer the only way you get better is by hard work! Not by some supplement or by "juicing" it up to gain an edge. They're all gonna get caught, the truth will come out. Numbers and facts don't hide, like these cheaters are trying to do.
As far as help for the Yanks goes superman will buy another arm for his staff but face the facts, while the Sox got younger players, the Yanks stayed old. Granted Schill and Wells are up there in age but so is Johnson and Mussina. Jared Wright is done so is Pavano and the Sox have a healthy Beckett so far. Who is probably one of the best young arms in baseball. It should be an interesting season to say the least. They may win 95 games if they stay healthy, I wouldn't be so sure of anything over 100 games it is a long season. The chemistry factor will be an issue also so only time will tell, the season is still young for bold predictions.
