Deval Patrick: The joke's on us

I don't take delight in watching Gov. Deval Patrick disintegrate only two months into the job. Nor do I like it when the governor is the butt of a majority of jokes during South Boston festivities celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Patrick was a good sport in Boston, but I find it hard to believe that he wasn't pained - or at least anguished - by the ribbing. Patrick's new communications team has now launched a major operation to reverse the negative trends. In fact, a WBZ poll recently found that Patrick's popularity has dipped 20 percentage points in two months. It took George Bush nearly three years to lose that much ground, and he's prosecuting an unpopular war. All Patrick did was act like British royalty. Anyway, it seems far-fetched that Patrick's propagandists can right this ship simply by talking over criticism with a rehash of the governor's popular talking points. That's what the plan is though. Keep the positive out front. Of course it won't work over the long haul, but these are policy wonks who get paid to develop media strategies. In my view, the governor has to start acting gubernatorial. Listen more. Learn. Act decisively. Right now, Patrick's been thinking only about himself. It's time he start thinking about the people.

Does Patrick really think its about a new communications team? He's lucky people are being distracted by the Caddy and the Helicopter, because once they start focusing on his policies, that's when the real doo-doo hits the fan.

Go hug your illegal immigrants and raise your meals taxes somewhere else Governor. We already have enough of both in Massachusetts.

    Hello James,
Deval has had to deal with alot of
personal problems in the last couple of
months. I know he has the stamina to over-
come these difficulties, so let's give him
the support he needs to solve the problems
    he is facing.
    Peace..Bill Deignan

I said way back during the election that Deval Patrick is the best thing to come along since Dukakis... for the opposition.

CLT is going to come back strong. Hopefully town taxpayers associations will return to prominence, and the Republicans have no where to go but up.

I've always believed (it has something to do with living in New England) that you can't have your Summer without suffering through Winter first.

    Jim,
You say Deval Patrick has to listen more to the people. Patrick won the governor's office by listening to people. I, for one, am tired of politicians just listening. I don't expect miraculous changes from any politician in two months time, but I have a difficult time stomaching the new caddy and drapes while I spent my tax returns fixing my wife's car so it can pass inspection. I don't like to be cynical, but it seems that guys like Mitt Romney, Travaglini, and even Marty Meehan only seem to use their stint as a politician to go on to something else, something financially lucrative. It seems their goal isn't to serve the people, but to use political office to serve themselves. Mr. Patrick's blunders reinforces my increasingly jaded view of politicians. We all want to believe in our elected officials. People were inspired by Patrick's promise of change and hope, just as they are inspired by Obama's words. And every time people think: We won't get fooled again -- this guy or gal is the real deal. Maybe it's unfair to expect so much from them. Or perhaps I just need to realize that their neither Republicans nor Democrats are interested in helping the middle and lower classes these days. And it's a sad day when a guy who grew up in the slums of Chicago spends more on curtains and a car than my wife and I made last year.

Right on Roger. Couldn't have said it better myself.
