Neon, no more?

sun sign.jpg I don't feel like writing about food today. Will you allow me to take a break? Thanks. My one burning question of the day is: What happened to the cool neon Sun sign in Kearney Square? She's out like the the Zakim Bridge. I noticed the dim Thurs. night and then again Sunday. Is this an economic decision? And if so, where's the outrage? Come on Lowellians this is our Citgo sign. Neon is being replaced w/ LED everywhere and this blue glow is (was?) one of the last vintage holdouts in the historic downtown. First the cobblestones got 86'd, now the Sun sign? We are loosing neon quicker than jobs in America. Skip's in Chelmsford faded away last summer and so did its sign, probably sold on EBay to some guy in New Jersey. Anybody know what happened to this downtown Lowell beacon?

I don't know what happened, but it has been out for weeks. The maintenance on the bulbs had gotten pretty shoddy anyhow - entire letters would be out for long periods of time. I've always wondered if The Sun or the people who have owned that building since The Sun moved decades ago were in charge of the lighting. I'm thinking if it was the paper (which would be a simple financial decision for them to make), you'd have heard about it.

I haven't been to Kearney Sq in a week or two - cobblestones?

it's been out for weeks? where is the outrage?????? Cobblestones, the rock not the restaurant, have been paved over throughout DTL. Easier on the cars and bikes, but a historic travesty.

I haven't noticed the paved-over cobblestones, but I haven't done much walking lately. Where? It looks to me from my daily commute that Palmer is still cobbled and the intersection of Central and Middlesex is too. I need to get out more :-) This guy is selling them! http://sunmarketplace.kaango.com/feViewAd/14599777

Honestly, there was no outrage from me because in this economy I assumed at best that the current owners just didn't want to pay for those tubes anymore, and at worst, that the newspaper still owned the sign. In that case, with the way finances and job losses are in papers around the country, lighting up a sign where the paper no longer even is just makes no sense. I certainly miss the sign...

The lights will go on. Just heard from The Sun publisher Mark O'Neil, the juice will flow over KS once again. Yea!

Awesome :-)

Now, there is only one question that has bugged me for years.

Kearney...do we pronounce that CARney or KEARney? I've heard both and prefer the former.
