A block from the ocean, Capri is like a wave of culinary pride lapping up Salisbury Beach. Last time I visited this down-on-its-luck trinket town, I thought of Asbury Park, NJ. Sadly, not even The Boss could make this gritty grotto shine. But Rosalita has come out tonight! In four hours I had pitch-perfect spaghetti Bolognese (pictured), a soothing coffee dairy twirl, golden fried clams, a veggie wrap w/ homemade hummus and (did I leave anything out?) oh yes a watermelon marg. on Surfside5's massive deck. No, I haven't turn into Gourmet Godzilla, I tried most and snapped the rest. Point is, carnie town has traded kitsch for kitch. The Pavilion group re-invented Capri several weeks ago into a Tuscan destination w/ lobster rav., caprese salad and other Mediterranean gems from chef Richard Lambiase (pictured) who worked at Abe and Louie's and Legals. Decor is tastefully rustic, lighting is romantic and while Capri doesn't scream "summer at the beach" it somehow works on these hot, dusty streets.
This summer (July perhaps) the same group opens Seaglass across the street in the former Pavilion. Make your rezzies now, this is the money spot. Billion dollar H20 views, a circular bar in-the-making embedded with (are you're paying attention?) seaglass. If the planned fish and steak menu matches the view, property values in Salis. are starting to skyrocket now.
Before heading home, I took Chelmsgal's advice on the vegetarian wrap at Jillys. I tucked the torpedo into my purse and paired it with Salmon Run chard for dins. The acidic wine was the only misstep. New York makes a great cheese cake, but the Empire State should leave vin-making to the Left Coast. And speaking of wine, when is Tutto Bene opening?
