Piece of CAKE

CAKE_concert086.jpg If alt-rockers CAKE were an actual cake, they would be red velvet. Lush, trendy, surprising and a little bit sick. "I'm sick of you, sick of me," was one of many chants frontman John McCrea lead the sold-out LMA crowd with last night. Packed, the place was w/ Gen-Xers and slackers. Made my pre-Millennial heart soar. Proves by booking non-legends slightly left of center (no more BB King pls) the Aud can fill the house. Anyone go? What is that cool rattle McCrea uses? This band is quirky as the day is long. And I love it. They are quirky enough to get away w/ handing out slices of cake after the show. Id love a yellow cake w/ chocolate frosting, or perhaps carrot w/ nuts. How 'bout you? What kind of cake would you like to eat on your way out of a show?

Yes I had to look it up, which is shameful considering as a guitarist in high school jazz band I counted as "auxiliary percussion" :-)

...and don't forget the boon to business these shows must be. I went to Etsogo before the show and they had to turn people away they were so busy. They worked like crazy and got the whole place cleared just in time for 8. And, much of the crowd at Etsogo and the show were not from Lowell itself, and new blood is a good thing. I wonder if we set up a second-run or indie movie theater in either the room the MRT uses or maybe the Smith Baker Center (never actually been in either), if we'd pick up more weeknight visitors...

true, the Blue Taleh was packed. Could only snag a round of crispy rolls and a Stella. Good to see a diff. crowd in town.

The wifey and I wandered aimlessly down Merrimack Street on Wednesday night trying to figure out why every single restaurant was packed with people (except Delicia's, where is where we decided to stop). I whipped out the iPhone and checked the Lowell Auditorium for confirmation, and immediately felt not only stupid but uber UNhip. I do like Cake, but not enough to pay $40 to see them.

It was so refreshing to see all those hipsters filling the downtown establishments, and I'd be curious to know if any of them will return without another hip show to bring them. Corey, regarding the indie theater, the Lowell Film Collaborative hosts indie screenings all over downtown, but they never seem to attract much more than familiar downtown faces. This summer there's an indie series that will take place every other Thursday night at LTC on Market Street. www.lowellfilmcollaborative.org (Cinema at Studio A)

Excellent point, Corey. I had no idea anything was going on until I started walking to Blue Taleh to pick up my take-out and realized the streets were packed. BT was packed to the gills, but they still had my food ready in less than 20 minutes. The owner looked tickled pink to be so busy in the middle of the week.

BC;
Is it possible, with regard to to Indie Screenings (Like "Cake"), more publicity would make a difference? If there is printed material available for the LFC screenings, we'd be happy to display that information in Cobblestones lobby.
