For the big Mem. Day weekend? So many places to visit, so many restaurants to try. If you're like me, you're pointing your Mini to the coast. But not all seaside joints are worth their salt. In Gloucester, for example, there are multiple waterfront haunts w/ great vittles, the new Sam Adams Brewery isn't one of them. Out of curiosity, we stopped into this harbor house last weekend. I've never seen a Sam Adams restaurant, now I consider myself lucky.
Sam, stick to what you know -- barley not burgers. The clam chowder was perfectly fine, not too lumpy or pasty and it paired nicely w/ buck wheat cherry ale, but things went sub-zero from there. When our meals arrived, they looked too perfect, almost plastic. Like the photo crew from some generic food mag. just left. You know how you know a meal is going to be insipid, just by looking at it? No manner of salad dressing, salt or squeezed lemon wedge could rectify this limp grilled scallop salad. Sigh! But onto better things ... the Salisbury Beach bistro scene hangs 10 this summer at Surfside5 and Capri. I'm visiting these places Friday for a newspaper spread. Anyone have a fav. Salisbury spot?
I went to Capri a few times last summer and the food was fabulous. I guess they did a whole remodel recently. Very Reasonable prices, great italian dishes and generous portions. I heard a new upscale seafood restaurant is opening in Salibury. But, you can't beat Lee Hunts for good firied seafood. Has to be take out or on the picnic tables, but it beats Markies and Browns hands down. Just the atmorsphere is not present. Tripolis and Christys for pizza is always good. Believe it or not, the ice cream at Joes Playland is better than Dairy Queen. One last plug, Jillies has the best hummus vegetarian syrian wrap. The hummus is hommus is homemade by the grandmother everyday and the fried pepper rings are fab! Can you tell I live at the beach all summer? Support your locals and stay out of the chains!
