Good weekend of stone cold munching. Here's my beef tho. On Friday coming back from a poetry reading up north, we were hungry and flummoxed. It was approaching the bewitching hour: 11 p.m. Headed south on Route 3, I thought of Fishbones. Knowing the Central Square hotspot in Chelms. has a newish bar, I thought for sure we could cop a glass and an app. Getting out of the car in the rain, wrapping on the locked front door, two woman at the bar just laughed at us! Ekk. Suburbia.
I thought of Cafe Madrid, but didn't want to waste a precious moment driving down Alpine Lane to find a shuttered door and more sneers. We went where we knew dish was still being dished, Moonstones. At 10:55 p.m. we could order tapas and burgers and slipped into a night-changing half carafe of sangria. My annual summer search for this wine punch has ended before it began. Delish!
We were glad they were open, but surprised so little else was. Beyond the diner, who's still dishin' in the kitchen past 10:30 p.m.? Gourmet grub in the 978 has to sneak past 9 p.m. if we are ever going to step into the restaruant ring w/ the big boys. All and any recommendations are appreciated. Don't let this happen to you. We can't always arrive at the bistro between the hours of 6 and 9.
We ran into the same issue 2 Fridays ago...thankfully the Beerworks kitchen is open until 11pm on weekends.
GG;
I'm glad we were there for you. (Poetry Reading, huh? Must've worked up quite the appetite! :)
I'd like to think we would have taken care of your pangs even at 11:05PM! Also, fyi, Cobbllestones has served food until (at least) 11PM for the past 15 years, for you "owls".
On another note...just a thought...why don't you invite all GG fans to moonstones some Friday Happy Hour in the near future, to personally confirm your great taste in Sangria, and moonstones will offer complimentary Tapas and Appetizers. Sort of a Gourmet Club, inspired by Gal...A Valley Gal Happy Hour?
Let me know which Friday and I'll be there 4-sho!
I would SO be there! Friday afternoons are reserved for my girlie time. This fits the bill!
Blue Taleh is open until 1AM Tuesday-Saturday, and they are open in Sundays! (One of the few places in DRL open in Sunday evenings.) I love that place.
Love the idea of Moonstones happy hour, I've been wanting to check 'em out!
Hate to point you north once again, but Nashua restaurants manage to stay open past 11:00pm.
They are many steps ahead of the Lowell area in terms of meeting the needs of patrons.
And to think I went to Moonstone's not too long ago and didn't sample the Sangria. :( I'll need to put that on the list.
Love the idea of a GG fans sampling at Moonstone's too! I could finally meet my favorite food Gal.
wow moonstones happy hour I am so there. will this be happening this Friday???? GG you have so many fans, you best be makin an appearance!
I think if GG started making appearances it would cheapen any future reviews at that particular restaurant. I would be skeptical of her agenda.
Someone should sign their post Debbie Downer....
I prefer Bob Bummer...
Speaking of late nights, Hookslides has seemed to change it's whole atmosphere. Don't get me wrong if there is a big game there is no better place and you can hear the game fine. But they now have bands on Friday's and Saturday's and no one can beat the outdoor seating. Im to old for the college scene but they say ULowell has left the Dub and Hookslides picked it up with a Dj on Thursday's with 2 dollar Paps 16 ounce can and 2 dollar Hookslides. Also they finally got a new chef after that disaster with Angelina's leaving them hanging. The new grub is unreal. All new specials, wait is a little long but you wait when people are out. The bar at the 99 is always good late night for a beer and burger or apps. Other then that I don't know to many places where you can get a beer and eats after work or late.
gal;
let's make friday 5/8, a special happy hour for GG followers ... 5PM to 7PM @ moonstones. An RSVP here would help.
Club Gourmet party with "pizza" and "hot dogs" too!
GG, the Athenian Corner will soon have an announcement regarding late night hours Monday through Saturday. The plan is to serve from our full menu till Midnight. We'll also be adding outdoor seating as the summer monts approach and some additional summer menu items to go along with our traditional favorites.
If all goes well, the new, extended hours kick off in May, with the outdoor seating beginning Memorial Day.
Hey Scott,
Is this official??? Because I'm putting this on my calendar right now.
Don't know if I can get there for the whole shabbang, since I work in Boston but I'm damn well gonna try. It's a straight shot to Moonstone's from the train station!
It's on.
Hey Teddy,
I'm not sure if you read this regularly or not, but with outside seating and extended hours talked about at the Athenian, are you still planning on expanding to actually be located on the corner? :-P
I know the economy is rough and financing it through selling condos in the space above would be hard, but with all the good things that have been happening downtown, seeing some new construction in addition to rehab would be great.
Read it every day Corey...it's the best of the SunBlogs...and I say that even though I write for one of them...LOL
Yes, expansion plans still there. Waiting for a little upturn in the condo market to finance them. In the meantime, we decided to implement some of the things we were planning for the expansionn. For now, we'll use the parking lot as our outdoor seating area. When construction starts, we will do our outdoor seating on the sidewalk.
Believe me...nobody will be any more excited to see shovels in the ground than I will be....seems like ww've been working on this forever...LOL
Thanx for the interest!
So is this Moonstone's happy hour for real on Friday? Will GG post about it or is it on the DL?
Faithfull food fans, the C'Mon Get Happy Hour has been rescheduled to May15, to ensure maximum happiness. Same time and place.
