Just add Coke?

winecocktails.jpeg The bartenders in Boston must be getting bored. Toro , a Ken Oringer joint, is practicing unethical treatment of wine. I just checked out the menu for the uber tapas spot in the South End and the cocktail section threw me for a major loop. I’ve heard of rum and Coke, we lived on them in high school, but red wine and Coke ... Excuse me?

The so-called Calimocho fetches $8 to marry these two great tastes that apparently taste great together. Reminds me of that Reeses mixup. It just could be good!
Then there’s Tinot de Verano, red wine and lemon-lime soda. Now that just seems wrong. Wouldn’t white wine be a better choice?

The rebujito funnels sherry and lemon-lime soda and the cava cocktail is champagne w/grapefruit bitters. That sounds drinkable. A graduated version of the pedestrian mimosa. Has anyone done the wine cocktail thing? Sounds better than some of those sickening martinis, I must admit. But this trend from our friends in Spain spanks of wine impurity. Purists are you out there?

I love trying new things, but this sounds disgusting!

I'm definitely on board for wine cocktails. The lemon-lime and red wine mix just simply sounds sangria-esque, and for me, delicious.

I love real sangria (red preferred) and you can even make it at home. However, over the summer a friend ordered a "poorman's sangria" (I think) on the decks in Portsmouth. It looked good and I asked what was in it. I don't think I ever found a recipe, but she said it's basically red wine, OJ and ice. I now make them over the summer and like them a lot. They goes great with anything off the grill, when you want something different than beer and more refreshing than red wine.

They didn't just make that up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calimocho

Tinto de verano is pretty good! I've had it in Spain a few times.

There should be laws against this. Drink a soda or drink some wine. Good golly Miss Molly........is anything sacred anymore??
