Drink inside the box

Bota%20Box%2006%20chard%20small.jpgCamping season is almost here and when nature calls, I recommend sipping your wine (four bottles worth) via the box. I finally succumbed to this trendy imbibe at a spring soiree last week and am still enjoying this wine, six days later. Can you remember the last time a bottle held up after day two, forget six? We packed our Bota chard to go when we headed to Vermont and this pouch inside a recyclable box travels as good as a wrinkle-free suit. I was skeptical at first, would it taste like wine in a box? It tasted like wine in a bottle. Anyone tried vino squared? We also bought the shiraz, which was even better, just don't pair it w/ wasabi peas whatever you do. Found mine at Concord Market, a vintage neighborhood market in West Conc., but I suspect you can nab one anywhere. I like the green look and feel of the Bota Box, gives me the illusion that I'm doing my part for the environment. And it really does hold four bottles of wine for $20. Cheers!

Ironically, I took the plunge yesterday, after doing a little research online. I did it for the environemtal and freshess reasons that you mentioned and it is a good value also. This is not the old "box o' wine" that I used to make fun of.

I chose Black Box cabernet, since it's on sale at NH liquor stores this month for $21 (normally $27) . It's definitely a good table wine and they do say that red wine (Resveratrol especially) is good for you.

See http://www.blackboxwines.com/

Fwiw, I've also purchased a few screw-top wines recently, including one from a "green" (carbon neutral) winery.

I'm a huge fan of Black Box wines. They are a great "house" wines - tasty and economical. When I'm having guests over I decant it into my grandmother's crystal decanter - instant class!

Ditto on that Marianne! Black Box is a great deal and shockingly good. I also decant my wine and no one the wiser. ;) Guess I just let out my secret.

Jeff, what is the carbon neutral winery of which you speak? Thanks! :-)

The carbon neutral wine I bought was Cono Sur (Pinot Noir from Chile). You can read about it at http://www.conosur.com/en/. I haven't tried it yet, though.

Another use I imagined for the Black Box wine was for making sangria for a party. We would end up needing multiple bottles, so I thought this would be a good solution. We were inspired by the sangrias at Tapeo on Newbury St. I liked the red, but she ordered the cava. Like a lot of sangrias by the glass, they were good but expensive...

Thanks, Jeff. I've been supporting Frey and Mondavi vineyards since they are both pretty "green" and make good, affordable wines. The shipping from Chile sort of undoes the carbon neutrality a bit, don't you think? ;-) Not that California is much better...

Valid point about the impact of shipping wines from far away. I fully support local breweries, but i much prefer wines from South America and Cali. But every little bit helps...

You might be interested in a couple of eco-friendly (or friendlier) wine options I recently read about. One is "ReCORK America" (www.recorkamerica.com), which advocates cork recycling. I actually have saved lots of corks over the years, looking for a use for them. If course, going "corkless" with boxes or screw-top wines is another option.

Another is at NH Liquor stores. In celebration of Earth Day, they have eco-friendly wines on sale all month. Additionally, if you bring your own bag, you save a buck (Apr 22-29). See http://www.nh.gov/liquor/index.shtml for details.
