A brunch crunch

brunch.jpg E-bunny is on his way and so is Mother's Day. In early spring thoughts turn to eggy dishes paired w/a mimosa (or two) followed by copious amounts of coffee and a sticky bun. Im taking about brunch ya'll. Where'd this act of civility go? I can't remember the last time I had an incredible mid-day repast on a wkend in DTL. Yes I can, it was the summer of 2006 and the Old Court was still slinging bangers and hash and bloody mary's to live for. Don't know what happened there ( RIP brown bread) but it's gone daddy gone. Who will step up to the brunch bunch? I know, I know, no restaurateur wants to tax their staff on the Sabbath. I get it. But we are heading straight into the season of the waffle and I can't think of one place to recommend a buffet-loving creature. A tragedy hardly on par w/ Darfur, but pressing none the less. The Left Bank, when it was Silks, had a fine spread. Anyone tried it? I was all set to take my mom to the House of Blues' gospel brunch, but it doesn't start till summer. Any ideas?

Hi. What a fine journal. But where is Lowell? Where is the Merrimak valley? I had to Google it to find out it was New Hampshire. Where is Lowell? Wikipedia doesn't show one in NH.
OK, the reason I'm asking is these sound like cool places. My daughter is inher last year at Culinary school, Art Institute in Houston. She will be able to go anywhere when she's done, with her Cajun Cuisine background and her chef schooling. I'm just excited to tell everyone, that's all.

I can't speak for DTL, but Michael Timothy's in Nashua used to have a fantastic brunch on Sundays, and at a reasonable price!

I agree that Greater Lowell is seriously lacking in brunch offerings. Centro used to have a great brunch, Brewery wasn't bad either, but I don't think either one do it anymore.

Westford Regency has standard brunch fare. Nothing fancy, but it fills the need.

Michael Timothy's in 'shua has a great Jazz brunch, but the place is too small for their following.

Back in our big city days, we used to make almost weekly pilgrimages to brunch at Bob the Chef's, Blue Room, Jake & Earls, Fire & Ice...

I'd love for Village Smokehouse to put out some chicken & waffles on a Sunday morn. Anything. I'd even settle for Lemongrass Waffles and Bacon-wrapped maki rolls at Blue Talleh. And come to think of it, I'd love to eat breakfast on Tabocas riverside deck some warm spring morn. Eggs, chorizo, & feijoada anyone? Oh h3ll, find me a spot and I'll do the cooking.

Its so hard to find a good brunch these days with all the chain places. The Bistro 44 in Bedford Mass has a unbelievable "old school"brunch. Its in the Bedford Glen Double Tree hotel and its very good. There kicking it with a throw back to the popular 80's brunch that every hotel had back in the day. Omelets, waffles, seafood, crepes, prime rib station , and of course eggs Benedict, its only $22.95.

Just another perspective. My beautiful sig. other and I tend to split an app and a dinner when we go out, We just don't eat that much. It could be that people don't gravitate towards those potentially large meals because of health and weight concerns. I love variety but restaurants get the best of me at a buffet. It's probably why I find small plate tapas so interesting.
BTW, we went to Bistro 44 on one of those restaurant.com coupons last week. The food was very good.

Ah, Bob the Chef's...now THERE'S a place missing in Lowell - good Southern cooking/soul food/Cajun even! (and Texas BBQ doesn't count, I'm afraid.

Here's one spot you gotta try. Acton Jazz Cafe on Route 2A in Acton. Its about 3 or 4 miles south of 495/110 Littleton or 2 or 3 miles north of Route 2 rotary in Concord. $19.95 brunch buffet from noon to 3 pm with live Jazz and no cover. This is a great hidden jewel in our area and often seems to struggle to keep going. I whole heartedly recommend this place. The entertainment is great all the time, food is great if a bit pricey. They have a web site so look'em up and give'em a try!
