Jazz club The Back Page opens this spring next to sushi bistro Blue Taleh in swinging Kearney Square. Owned by the brother of Taleh owner Steve Rameriz, Lowell’s new music club should hop. And since the spot is next to the restaurant along the canal, it will serve apps from the BT. I hope the volcano makes the list and tuna tostatos. I dined there last night for Great Plates, which became Pricey Plates with avocado salad (so good), volcano and a boatload of sushi. New discovery: white tuna sushi packed a clean protein punch. They may have lost their star sushi chef and fancy bartender Matt, but they haven’t missed a beat. New mixologist Victor and his perky co-pilot add a youthful glow to the place and make a meal at the bar more fun. Only caveat: the blue taleh mojito. It sounds like a pathway to paradise, but too much simple syrup makes this a trip to saccharineville, where no hungry diner wants to go. Trust me. I new I was in trouble when I saw the blue hue. A drink should be that color, unless you’re a mermaid. Victor nicely diluted the libation with soda water and transferred it to a tall glass, but it was still too candy forward. The drink clouded my taste buds. In retrospect I wish I had asked for a different cocktail. Is that within my rights? I’ve done it with beer, but a cocktail is a different story. Has anyone made the sip switch successfully?

I don't like to send anything back, grub or liquids unless it's really bad. In your case, it sounded bad enough to make the switch. I've mentioned something about certain bitter or extra sour concoctions more than once before and have had bartenders take a straw and sample their hasty mixes. I've never had a bartender not whip up another. It MAkes sense considering you'd think you were in Boston with the price tags on some of these cockatils they serve down town. But then you look around and are quickly reminded that you are infact in DTL.
I went to the BT on friday and ate at a high table in the bar area. I'm happy to report the service was so much better than in the past. The food was fresh and tasty as usual. Though the drinks are still overpriced the overall experience was a good one.
The BT is by far my favorite place in the area. The food, as well as the service, is always wonderful. THe Pomapolitan Martini is one of the best drinks that I have ever had. The bartender was kind enough to show me how to make it at home. Victor is AMAZING and is the primary reason I keep going back. He makes the experience there so much better than a normal dining out. Friendly is not a strong enough word to describe his personality.
I can't wait for the new Jazz Bar. I am sure it will be fabulous.
