Are coming in from across Canada. And when they hit, a comforting bowl of chili is the perfect RX. I tucked into a bountiful cup yesterday at Ferns Country Store in Carlisle. Not too spicy and plenty meaty, this chili was just what I needed after a stenuous walk in the woods. The hunger pangs of January combined with cold feet and a deadening of the pulse are like non-other. After the first satisfying spoonful, I realized this chili was medicine. Coffee, earl grey, soup will warm the blood sure, but do nothing to maintain one's energy. This VT-inspired country store is known for its chili and it goes quick. I snagged the last cup. My only beef is the 25 cent charge for oyster crackers. If you're buying chili, or any kind of soup, a side of starch is automatic, right? I know times are tough, but throw in the crackers, will ya? It's makes the meal. What are some other chili hot spots?

Good morning Gourmet Gal! I'm glad that you enjoyed your bowl of chili at Ferns Country Store - serving upwards of 40 lbs a day is proof positive that it's wicked popular. As a Co-Proprietor of the store, I do want to apologize for two points you made in your review: 1) We always have Chili available. However, there are some days when we just blow through it and our Crew Members have a hard time keeping up with the demand. If we do run out then it's a temprary situation and more should be availabel in approx. 15-20 minutes. 2) Oyster cracker packets are free with Chili or our gourmet soups - always. The 25c charge applies to folks who want crackers just as a snack. Next time you're in take two! I'll take a look at the signage to be sure it's clear.
Thanks for stopping by. Have a Happy New Year!
We second the Fern's chili! My kids cannot get enough of it. That is my "beef" ;they have run out and it is major dissapointment. Nothing satisfies quite like it!
