Take a long hard look at this picture. Do you recognize it? It's fruit. Fresh fruit. A commodity that's as scarce in Lowell as free parking. So I understand if you can't identify it. Local fruit is the focus of the new market on Market St. which opens in March.
Great bread, prepared foods, healthy grab and go meals, sandwiches and wine: "Like a New York deli. You turn the corner and bang, it's all there. Everything you need," said owner Rob Nason. That's music to my dim little ears. Located next to the Blue Shamrock, right across from the parking garage, the location is prime for commuters pre and post trip and the rest of the downtown dwellers. Here's the fun part. They are looking for a name and need our help. Come up with something catchy and if the Nason’s pick yours, you win a $100 gift certificate. That should get you going. Market Squared is my pick. What's yours?

Just a note on DTL supermarkets. I was out for a run last night (pre-snowstorm, luckily) and ran by the new International foods market on Appleton St. (between the Haffner's and the Tedesci convenience store). I think it's called King's Foods. Anyway, I'd forgotten that it had opened, so I popped in, only to be floored by the freakin' size of the place. At this point, there is plenty of empty space toward the back, but I was pretty surprised at the choices available (a lot better than the "convenience" store on Market St. by Centro) and the front desk employee - I think the son of the owner - was very pleasant and encouraged any ideas for additional items to carry. He also promised more produce in the near future. I definitely plan on going back when I'm carrying more than my i-Pod with me. Has anyone else been to this place?

BC, thanks for the heads up on King's Foods. I didn't know it was there but now I'm curious. Is it truly international in its variety?
Re: the Nason's new market, I suggest the name, Fresh on Market.

Jeannie's suggestion of "Market on Market St" abbreviates to MOMs...
Other than that, I'm having a wicked time coming up with anything serious. Things like The Nasonic Stall (Masonic Hall hurr hurr) and Yuppie Chow Emporium keep popping into my head :-)
The description as "New York Deli" doesn't sound super trendy, so what's the vibe of this place going to be? If this place is going to look like C'est inside, that's one set of names, and if it's going to look like your classic corner market, something far simpler would work better.

I love the idea of a new Market that actually has fresh fruit and deli style food. I grew up in Brooklyn and can honestly say that it is the one thing, aside from awesome NY pizza on every corner, that I really, really, really miss!
Bring it on!!!

How about Pizzi's?
Sorry about that. Bad joke. Good luck with the new store, whatever you call it. I'll stop on by when downtown.

I just like NASONS MKT. You need to have awnings outside, and baskets full of fruits. Kind of like that place on Seasame Street.

Jackeig,
I just happened to go back to the archives and read your comment about winning. We actually had a few winners who emailed us and their names were mentioned in the paper but we sure would not want to leave you out! If you happened to see this please email us at lowellmarket@yahoo.com.
Thanks
