Taking a bite of the Big Apple

Just returned from four glorious days in Manhattan, food capital of the east, nay the world. Too much to write about in a short blog post, so I'll give a brief flyover — there are no bad restaurants in Manhattan. From the calamari at Dizzy's Coca-Cola Club to the homemade biscuits at the Waverly Inn, to cupcakes at Eleni's in Chelsea Market to bagels and drinking chocolate at diners and trendy little cafes in Hell's Kitchen, my senses were in overdrive. Makes me think that Lowell has a long, long way to go, ditto Boston in matters of the stomach. I didn't get to eat enough chocolate and found out about Fine and Raw Chocolate in Brooklyn
fineandraw.com when it was too late. Sounds like a good stocking stuffer. Also I recently wrote about Tast-i-Delight. It's been superseded by Pinkberry www.pinkberry.com
Swirly bliss. Did I save room for bread? You bet. Grabbed a loaf of Hot and Crusty at Grand Central on the way out. Ummm. We need a bakery here. Where to begin?

Having lived in Lowell and now Manhattan it is impossible to compare the 2. Lowell certainly has come a long way but you can't put the 2 in the same hemisphere. I am quite impressed you hit the Waverly, however it has sadly passed its prime now. Truffles Mac and Cheese is still very good though. Next time you go you should really hit Sfoglia which is the greatest italian food i have ever dined on. You may also want to try Philipe which is owned by the same people who did Mr. Chow's. I read your stuff all the time and i am very impressed with your updated blogs.

Thanks. I love NY! I will hit those locales. Do you really think Waverly has jumped the shark? it was totally and completely packed. A magical spot.

nyc foodie:

I am so envious of you! NYC... so much to offer foodwise, culturally.educationally...

Happy Holidays!

This conversation is just silly. I can have a blast with my friends at Canobie Lake, but I'm not going to come home and comment on how it compared to Disney World, nor vice versa. Just silly.

GG and Peter:
I love NY, too, and beg to differ that it's silly to compare the merits of the Big Apple with the much smaller Mill City. Thank goodness GG and her guy get out of town once in awhile. Their travels make for great reading and offer us stay-at-homes different options to enjoy - if only in our imaginations.
Keep feeding our thoughts!

GG,
i wouldn't say waverly has officially jumped the shark but the quality has gone down the bigger it has gotten. Sfoglia is uptown (93rd and Lex) and a very tough ticket to get a reservation but well worth it. I do love the new bar-b-que place in Lowell and for its size the Mill City is certainly getting more and more adventurous with its cusine choices.
