Get in your last licks

ice%20cream%204.gif Ice Cream and fro-yo shop Monkeys is closing at the end of the month. Now before you go ape, relax they will re-open in the spring. For now cancel all visions of eggnog sundaes and hot chocolate a la mode sashaying through your head.
“Sales have dropped off,” said co-owner Andy Jacobson, who also runs Brew’d Awakening around the corner on Market St. When the snow melts they will return as a stronger, sweet-fueled force. Baked goods, fudge and artisan chocolate are the treats on tap.

I loved what they did with the place, the cartoony murals, and their cupcakes — while untested by yours truly — looked cute enough to eat. Am I the only crazed ninny who likes ice cream in the winter? Visit NYC lately? Tasti-Delight is rivaling coffee shops on neighborhood blocks. The whipped up low-cal softserve delight is so yummy I lived on it for weeks when I was a latte slinging pauper in the 90s. In other DTL news we hear corner street bistro Fortunatos might be closing. Anyone know? I thought they finally got their game down.

A lot of people bash Fortunato's on this board, but I've never had a bad meal there (in fact the food was always quite good). The service, however leaves a lot to be desired and at MAX I have seen maybe 6 other people there at the same time I was eating, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were closing.

I heard Bombay Mahal is closing as well. Are all the new eateries forcing out the old guard?

Of course they're causing the old guard to close. Unfortunately, the new guard like Fortunatos closes with them.

I don't know where this theory came from that if you keep adding eating establishments, more people will jam the downtown streets and help out everyone else. The restaurant biz doesn't work that way. Restaurants thrive where other draws bring in the crowds.

If true about Fortunato's, its sad but not unexpected. The writing's been on that wall for a while. The Smokehouse was the final nail.

Ok...I really just shed a couple of tears, and it wasn't over Fortunato's closing. Is Bombay really closing, please, say it aint so! I know they've gotten a little lazy over the years but I still love their food.

Speaking of Indian...I went to Punjab in Arlington Ctr. on Monday and it was fantastic. It definitely gets 5 stars from me!

Funny...I was in NYC the last two days for work and had a Peanut Butter Cake Tasti-Delight while tooling around Times Square. Holy crap, was it delish. How come this isn't a national craze? I felt like Elaine from Seinfeld in the episode where she discovers "fat-free" yogurt. As soon as I finished, I wanted to go back and order another!!!

I'm Back..... Me and the ball and chain tried a seafood place out in North Andover the other day called Joe Fish. It was absolutely amazing. I'll even say i liked it better than legal seafood. You shoulda seen my fat wife stuffing her face with fried clams. It was truly entertaining to watch her eat them by the handful. I had a delicious haddock casserol. We had a few drinks and then a dozen raw oysters after our meal. That's right AFTER, as oysters truly are an aphrodesiac why waste their effect before the meal when they will wear off when it's time to go. And these were some fresh oysters let me tell you. We sped the whole way home and when we got there me and the wife could not keep our hands off each other.... It was a great time, you all should try joe fish on 114 in north andover... They were a little pricey and the bartender wouldn't shut up but the service was great. two thumbs up

I would be very sad to see Bombay Mahal close. I love the food! I'm not around much at lunch time in DTL, so I don't know how their business is then, but in the evenings it seems to be pretty lonely in there.

Bombay Mahal is not closing. It was a nasty rumor generated by some blog! I just called the owner and he confirmed it. Curry for everyone!

What do you order when you go to Bombay?

That's good news, would be very sad to see Bombay Mahal go. They have been in Lowell for a long time and their food and service is awesome.

Last time I was at Bombay, the owner told me he was selling the place because he couldn't make any money. We ordered take-out last night (they're still open) and were requested to pay in cash. The area behind the counter is empty, and has been for weeks.

I am so happy that Bombay is not closing! I love Indian food and have eaten it from Lowell to Lexington to London. The owners at Bombay Mahal cook their food as if you were company coming to their home. I love everything but most especially the chicken tikka massala, spinach with cheese and samosas!

I love the lentil soup at Bombay Mahal. I think he has changed the recipe in the last few months, I prefer the old recipe with lemon in it, but it's still very tasty on a cold, wintry day.

Jeannie...
Those are my faves too!!! Chicken tikka massala is soooo good at Bombay. I think I'll go there this weekend now that they're fresh in my mind.

Although I certainly never go to Bombay Mahal when I'm in a hurry (actually haven't been in there in a very long time) I did absolutely love their food and would be sad to see them go, but they are always empty...

I have suggested Joe Fish before, and yes, it is unbelievable and I still don't know why Naaath Ahnduvah gets a restaurant like that and we don't! >:O
