Now that the election is over, we can get back to real meat issues, like hamburgers. Where's your fav? I just heard that Bad Dawgs is in the burger game now. The Merrimack St. hot doggery is doing sliders, trendy word for mini burgers. Where does this name come from? I don't like the idea of sliding a burger down my throat, I want to savor every juicy bite. The new Village Smokehouse has 1/2 pound burgers that sound incredible. The death burger — onions, jalapenos, cheese and bacon should get you going. Then there's the California burger w/ guacamole, bacon and cheese. I also understand the Blue Angus in Dracut does a mean, clean burger. Does La Boniche do a French version? Now that Ques. No. 2 passed I have the munchies. Oh ya, Elliot's Hot Dogs closed all three locations last week. I forgot to blog about it, because I had a story in the paper. Sad day for die-hard Lowellians, but a sign o' the times, I guess. Never much loved the gray-ish dogs, but the one they gave me last Fri. hit the spot. Like it w/ kraut, myself.

You had to order hot dogs from Elliot's 'trailer style' - deep fried! Heart attack in a bun, but Oh so delicious. I really wish there had been some notice that Elliot's was closing so I could have hit them up for one last trailer dog (or 6).
Right now, I think Lowell Beer Works has the best burgers. For a while it was Sangria's, but every time I go there, I just have to get the ceasar salad wrap. I recently tried the California Burger at Village Smokehouse, and thought that the burger would have been out of this world if the guac was homemade. Definitely try Lowell Beer Works' burgers for sure.
I'm not surprised the other two Elliot's closed but I am surprised the flagship Elliot's is gone. I havn't been there in a year or two but will miss them. Maybe someone will reopen it? And I don't get the gray-ish comment. Bad Dawgs couldn't hold a candle to Elliot's when it comes to dogs with traditional toppings.
I'm going to have to agree 100% with JK, if I had to pick a local burger Beer Works wins it. I had the most delish burger at Beer Works a couple of weeks ago. I am a well-done girl ,but I don't like my burger dry or with crispy edges...only a few special places can master this art. They got it just right, no pink - yet still juicy. The fries were solid. We also got the Calamari & the artchoke dip...also a good time.
As for my fave burger...that's got to be the Sports Grille right across from the Garden. It's not Lowell but it's fantastic and worth a mention. The Beehive has a close second...sorry, also in Boston.
I am heading to the Village smokehouse Friday and as much as I want to try their burger I'm craving a pulled pork. I'll have to take your word for it.
I really really liked the rebel burger at Olde Court, I mean REALLY. Now I'm jonesing to try the others you guys are mentioning!! Buuut, I've already been told by Mrs. Rollins we're eating at home tonight but now I've gone and gotten burger on the brain thanks to GG. Quick I need a way out!!!! Any ideas?
Everytime I walk by Bad Dawgs it's either closed or empty.

people, where is this beer works that you speak of?? I love village smokehouse, but haven't tried one of their burgers. But burgers from bad dawgs???? Come on!!! They do have great hot dogs though. As far as Eliot's, who cares i never thought they were anything special and that appletonn street location is horrible. I've had the burger peter was talking about at the OLD court.
Gobbo...you seriously just made me laugh out loud with your lowellita comment. Thanks, I needed that.
Beerworks is right downstairs from the Brewery. They took over the restaurant and beerworked the place out. It looks completely different! Check it out.
I LOVE the burgers at the Old Court. I tried going to Bad Dawgs this weekend, and they had no soda! That's a dealbreaker, so, I went across the street to Hookslides, and the burger there was greasy, boring, and on a seemingly stale bun. I've liked them there before - what gives?
The burger at Cobblestones is excellent.
Another interesting "best of" for me is best steak tip Caesar salad. For me it's Beer Works, followed by Old Court, followed by Village Smokehouse.
elliots was o.k. and bad dogs was alright ,i miss the sausage man that had his cart outside the bank now that was good.
p.s. gobbo can u please leave Lowellita alone ,seems like u have a crush on the sun's best writer ,speaking of dogs ,you come off as a bit of a weener yourself.
Glad i could brighten your day anonymous, but which lowellita comment? I can't stand her so i've made many. Thank you for the info on beer works by the way.
lol, yeah sebastian i can be quite a weiner, but how dare you come onto Gourmet Gal's blog and calll Lowellita the Sun's best writer?
Hey, anyone know one of these people who profess to actually like, or even "prefer" turkey burgers? I've had them several times, and if the Doctor tells me I had a beef allergy I's have to get by one them but PULEEASE, don't tell me they're better. You're just fooling yourself!
This past summer we replaced hamburgers with those sausage patty burgers...let me tell you, THAT was a real treat to have once in a while!!
Remember when the sausage guy set up shop in the dental parking lot near the Dub after last call....them are what I like to call "the good ol' days"
For some reason my comments keep coming up as anonymous...hmmm...maybe someone is trying to tell me something?
I thought it was pretty funny that you said that you didn't like going to the OC because Lowellita hangs there and you find her annoying. Priceless!
I'm beginning to think you hate Cobblestones and that's a shame because I was just starting to like you. ;) FYI: The burger at Cobblestones is only a buck more than Beerworks, not 75.
Whoa...allergy to beef. That's rough. No way a turkey burger can compare to a beef burger, sorry.
Ruby
Turkey bugers are good - nice for a change once in a while but there's no way that they're better than good old beef! It's the people who say they like those veggie patty soy burger things (aka hockey pucks) that really worry me...
So, have things calmed down at VSH yet? was thinking of taking the family tonight. teeens have little tolerance for the wait
The Olde Court burger is my favorite and their fries are great too. I have a bun to burger ratio issue and they got it perfect.
Village smokehouse was a mixed-bag for me. The wait at the bar was ridiculous. I'm talking not even a glance my way. It took us about 20 minutes to even get noticed. It took us forever to get a table, I'm guessing we should have called ahead. My boyfriend loved the ribs and the french fries. I ordered the pulled pork and wasn't overly impressed. It was lacking in flavor and arrived cold. The fries and the baked beans were really good though. I was also not allowed to substitute fries for cole slaw & pickles and I was more than a little annoyed by that. I really love what they did to the place and our waiter was awesome! I think that once they get a few of the kinks worked out the place will be great. I'll be back in a month or two to see if they've gotten it together. Next time I'll just get a burger.
Oh and side note: Went to the Phantom Gourmet Beer & Food Phest and was super dissappointed. It seems like they forgot about the food aspect of the festival. Firefly's ran out of bread for their pulled pork sandwiches around 6 o'clock. Can you say poor planning.
I hit up the Smokehouse twice last week. On Wednesday, our experience was very nice. Food was great (I had the Baby Back ribs and texas sausage) and our waiter was good enough. Our visit on Friday was a different story. The food was good again (I had the death burger this time around) but the wait staff doesn't appear to be able to handle a busy crowd. Visits to the table were few and far between and being in the bar section, I planned on staying a while to have some drinks after finishing the meal. The waitress brought the bill over immediately after clearing the plates, so I took the hint and we settled up and left. The strangest thing about the visit, I thought, was that at 730PM, they had already run out of corn bread. Seems like poor planning. A friend of mine went on Saturday and while he liked the food, thought the service was terrible. Salad never arrived to the table (waiter later told them that they were out of garden salad...ummm, what??), plates and utensils weren't provided until 5 minutes after the meal was served. It blows my mind how service can be this bad. Where is management on nights like this?? These things can't happen...
A group of us tried the Village Smokehouse saturday night and received the wrong beers, twice, after way to long a wait. And they ran out of ribs. I have the same question as little jerry...whose running the place? Some food was good enough, but my med rare burger was well done. The honeymoon over folks. Good prices and rehab? Not good enough.
I'm with Craig, the Yahoo Burger at Cobblestones is at the top of my list.
The Beer Works is a close second though.
yahoo burger is not that good..... try a google burger
My first VSH experience was good. The second went much like the last few commenters said.
Very slow service. V...E...R...Y S...L...O...W.
Wrong items served. Food was okay, though not that good to overcome poor service. We left trying to figure out why the waitstaff seems to be so overwhelmed but there are four people staningd behind and around the front counter. Might be a better use of resources to throw one or two of them on the floor and wait tables, from my vantage point.
Tried the Village Smokehouse Texas Burger with bacon and cheese this past weekend. I must say it was right up there with the better burgers I've eaten (though I have had better). I like how they add the BBQ sauce onto the burger and then melt the cheese on top and place the perfectly cooked bacon on top. Also, the included side of baked beans and fries topped it off nicely. Our waitress was great and the food came out pretty quick. I will definitely go back again and recommend it- the bar seems just like what downtown needed, something spacious and open.

Buncha cranks maybe?
Man I went back to the Village Smokehouse for my fourth time! I CAN NOT get enough of those beef ribs!!!
The bakes sweet potato is liek eating candy, but it's good for me! Right?
The people are so friendly and I just keep in mind that not only are all these people new, they haven't worked together either. The Patriots didn't become the Patriots in a month.
Man, I think I need to go get some more of those Beef ribs!! Ran out of ribs? That's one thing I would NOT be happy about!!!!
