Three cheers for the dead!

SugarSkullMound.jpg If you like Mexican food, the kind you need a passport for, Mr. Jalapeno is rolling out a spread tomorrow night to die for. Here in the states we celebrate Halloween w/ candy, in sunny Mexico they celebrate Day of the Dead w/ traditional Aztec food. Which is better? I'll take shrimp floutas, a special fish dish called veracroz, cactus salad and Mexican flan over candy corn. To toast the Mexican holy day Mr. J on Merrimack St. prepares a festive spread nightly for a week. For $25 you can sip on horchata, a sweet rice drink and listen to the sultry stylings of singer Valeria. As a member of the Association of Mexican Restaurants, Jalapeno is one of seven Mexican cantinas in the state participating in this world-wide coordinated feast. Oh and you can feel good about shedding the dinero, it goes to charities helping poor bambinos in Mexico. To celebrate the souls who have left this earth, a new menu will be offered every night from Oct. 31 to Nov. 6. Sorry no liquor license means no margaritas. Knock one back ahead of time at Mambo Grill across the street.

Bambinos are Italian!

Why does Mr. Jalapeno not have a liquor license yet??

Mr Jalapenos is a nice little spot. It's too bad that they do not have a liquor license, but like GG said go have a couple across the street at the mambo grill.

In the battle of mexican restaurants in Lowell, Mambo Grill wins hands down, and not just because they have a liquor license. Mr. J's is good, but Mambo just serves better, fresher, tastier food.

Can we please retire the use of "hands down" in here? It's really innapropriate considering we're talking opinion. I for one think Mr. Jalapeno is much better becuase it's infinately more authentic, and "that's that."

I would have to give my vote to Mr. Jalapeno's by far. Mambo Grill is not real Mexican food, it is cal-mex, and not even a great example of that. When Mr. J's gets its liquor license, expect to see Mambo going out of business soon after.

The only inappropriate action regarding the expression of an opinion in censorship.

I respect your right to disagree with my opinion, and to express that disagreement. But please, let's not get into what words or phrases should or should not be used to express our opinions. Nothing is inappropriate about expressing an opinion, unless done so in a malicious way.

Let me just say as someone without a "refined" taste in Mexican food, I'm more of a fan of the cal-mex college buritto bar sort of place that Mambo is, so I wouldn't be so quick to call for its demise because I know I'm not alone.

I have a problem with people stating opinions as if they were facts and that's all I'm going to say about that.
Just because a restaurant isn't "authentic" Mexican doesn't mean it's not good. And "authentic" to one person isn't always what's "authentic" to the next.
I think Mambo serves fresher food, and there is obviously a need for that kind of Mexican since they are always busy and I don't think it has anything to do with their having a liqour license. I thought Mr. Jalapeno's was good, a little too greasy for my taste but it was good nonetheless.
As for the best Mexican around, that's always a matter of opinion. In my opinion, it is La Carreta. There is definitely room for two Mexican restaurants in Lowell, especially since they have their own unique styles.

I prefer Mr jalapeno, but do have to agree with ruby. There is room for two mexican restaurants. There's been two greek ones down the street from each other for 30 plus years and they both do well
