Recession-proof dining

We here at Gourmet Gal care about your bottom line. We (like you) are cutting coupons and buying screw-top wine. With the economy sputtering out of control, we are waiting to get invited to restaurant openings to gorge on heavy hors d'oeuvres. But in these belt-tighting times those freebie are getting slim and slimmer. So when these two weekend events popped up in our inbox, we immediately thought bargain. Tonight the Billerica Library holds its annual wine tasting. While knocking back an abruzzo w/ Billerica selectmen doesn't sound like the coolest thing, I assure you this is a good time. I went years ago when this library first opened and it was here among the stacks that I knocked back my first Concord Ale Rapscallion (you never forget your first little devil), There will be food and speciality beers and you'll walk home w/ a wine glass all for $25.15 Concord Rd. Billerica, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Second event to make the frugal list is the Taste of the Town Sunday at the DoubleTree. Tix are $60 (what??) OK, not cheap, but a stone cold bargain when you break it down. 25, maybe 30 restaurants from the area offering up tasty fare. I'm talking prime rib, pasta galore and pumpkin cheese cake (we hope). You can't eat like this for $60 on the street. You can not. Starts at 5 p.m.

Hello,
Any word on the other "C'est?" Is it open(ing). I haven't made it down that street in a while.
Thanks,
P. Rollins Jr.

GG:

The other C'est, Tuttobene is set to open by the holidays.
When it does, it's going to be beautiful and gourmet-focused. I think Greater Lowell foodies will be pleasantly pleased.

There's also Restaurant Week in Portsmouth (one of my favorite dining destinations) the week of Nov 10-16. It looks much improved over last time, with many more interesting restaurants on board. Three-course prix fixe menus are: $16.95 per person for lunch, and $29.95 per person for dinner (does not include beverages, taxes or gratuity)

See http://www.portsmouthchamber.org/restaurantweek.cfm for details

I just noticed that Restaurants.com is having an 80% off sale - basically you buy gift certificates online and print them out. It goes $10 for $3, $25 for $10. There are a lot of local places that take these, including Centro, Ricardo's, Mambo, and more. Exciting! You have a year to use them. There are minimum orders, etc. that vary by the place, but it's clearly spelled out. Anyone done this?

Peter Rollins:

Yeah I've done it, and felt ripped off to be honest. They come with all kinds of qualifications like "only good weekday evenings before 7PM." If you know YOU will use them, go for it. But the restriction are so sever I would never give it away as a gift because it's very obvious it's basically a "coupon."
