As the leaves start to fall from the trees and the evenings grow chill, thoughts turn to jiggers of scotch with butternut squash ravioli and hazelnut creme brulee. What am I talking about? Scotch dinners of course. They do it down at the Taj in Boston, at Serene in Andover and at the Bull Run in Shirley. Putting a nubile 10-year scotch up against an antique 20-year malted is what this food and drink paring is all about. Not a fan of the brown liquor, I wonder is there a discernible difference in taste here, or is this yet another excuse to get snockered on a Tuesday night? Find out Nov. 5 when Serene holds a drown your sorrows post-election night scotch dinner. Not sure what's on the menu as every time the chef tried to experiment, he lost his balance and had to be sent home. *These are the jokes people!* When autumn hits I reach for a pumpkin ale. And Im proud to report I discovered the best one yet from the fine makers of Smuttynose. Not too sweet, or artificial tasting, Smuttynose pumpkin is what you want to be serving trick or treators next week. Fisherman's ale has a pretty tasty pumpkin stout, which I found at Jack O'Lantern in Ayer. This strange little shop at the route 2A rotary has a mighty beer selection. What are you popping this holiday season?

This is off topic...but speaking of "drowning your sorrows post-election night"...are there any pubs around town that people tend to gather to watch the election returns? if you know of a place, and whether the gathering tends to attract more Dems or Repubs, please advise!
Ahh, fall, the best beer season. Our favorite is pumpkin ale is Shipyard. They had it on tap at Old Court but ran out recently. Sea Dog pumpkin is also good, very comparable to the Shipyard. Both are relatively light for an ale. On the darker side, Gritty McDuff's Halloween Ale is also a great fall brew.

And how quickly it ends! I bought the last two cases of Shipyard Pumpkinhead at a Chelmsford store yesterday and could not believe that the winter beers were already on the shelves!!! It bothers me that pumpkin beers and autumn beers (with the exception of Octoberfest, of course) aren't available through Thanksgiving! I don't know about everyont else but I'm not ready for the winter beers until December.
