The Jonah Gold. I'm enjoying the best apples of the season picked two days ago at Berlin Orchards. Sorry Macs, Cortlands and Macouns, you can’t touch this. With a solid, snap, this golden boy is the dream we all have when fall comes around. But I don't remember the sweet Jonah Gold before? I spent the weekend in apple country and ate enough apples to impress all the white coats in Boston, but hey fall only comes once people. Berlin Orchards has a great selection of red orbs and this is one large operation that holds on to its integrity. Not overly commercial, no gigantic asphalt parking lot or a man waving in an apple suit. Equipt with family friendly goats and peacocks in a hillside pen, BO offers a little more for the apple seeker. I don't care if you are childless these furry/feathery beasts are fascinating. The plan was to go home and bake an apple pie, but then I realized, I'm not a Walton. It's Saturday night. So we had diner at 51 Main in Maynard. The ambiance is nice, but the food needs some perking up. Downtown Maynard is great (you can go to a movie after all) but the dining scene makes Lowell feel like Soho. We are very lucky indeed!

Any chance of reviewing restaurants that are actually in Lowell?
I'm relatively new to Lowell and appreciate your reviews of places beyond Lowell, but I am enjoying lots of great restaurants.. many mom and pop.... right here in Lowell. A scan of the archives of this blog and the Signature Dish leave out so many good places I've run across. What about Phien's Kitchen for Laotian cuisine? What about the delicious caldeirada at the Four Seasons?
There are lots of great places... I hope your blog begins to focus on the in-town places. Let's find ways to promote and patronize them.
Hey Prof,
I've given shout outs to soooo many Lowell establishments I decided to venture out a bit for fear of over saturation. Check out today's sig dish, Mr. Jalapeno. The chorizo burrito is a filling delight.
Thanks for the tips, I've long wanted to check out Phiens.
I agree with the prof. I could care less about Andover or Nashua.
I'm going to disagree with Brian. I think at least downtown Nashua is worth covering. As a former resident of Tyngsboro, I've spent a lot of time in both and they have a lot more in common than not, and both are plenty different from the Daniel Webster that we all associate Nashua with. In fact, I'd go as far as to say downtown Nashua has some restaurants and shops that downtown Lowell should be envious of, and vice versa.
Even though I live in Lowell now, I still venture up to the Gate City for an interesting beer at Martha's or the Short Rib and horseradish sauce at Peddler's daughter (although the original Peddler's in Haverhill is the only restaurant I've ever been to that has old sewing machine desks and accounting desks as tables!) I got my gift certificate to Surf off of the print edition of The Sun last week and fully intend to use that as well.
Lowell has a great restauarant scene, but we certainly don't corner it, and there are plenty of other local towns with other good places to eat that keep money in the local economy as well. Venture out a bit!
