A strange brew

robert.jpg It was a fowl day for traipsing around Boston. But there we were, hungry and walking down Comm Ave. yesterday. To escape the throngs of Fenway-goers and aggressive scalpers, we ducked into Petite Robert Bistro in Kenmore Sq. and entered a Parisian state of bliss. OK, I wasn't as blown away by this place as I thought I would be, but the food was smart, bright, clean and tasty. Also inexpensive for a much-touted French bistro with a sister spot in the South End. Express lunches go for $6 to $8 and include a creamy cauliflower soup and tiger shrimp salad w/ cucumber yogurt. The baguette was v. French, the coffee was strong. pomme frites crisp and there were a few unusual items on the menu. Coffee soup caught my eye. When I asked the waitress about this, she said it was bitter coffee w. mashed potatoes. Excuse me? Have you ever heard of anything more unpalatable? She also said no one has ever ordered it. No wonder. The chef must have been smoking some good stuff when he came up w/ that misfire. Time for an 86 little bob. What's the weirdest menu item you've come across lately?

GG, Not sure if you were aware, but Jacky Robert, the chef used to be head chef at the old Maison Robert that was located in the old city hall (now Ruth's Chris). So he has a pretty strong history on the boston gastronomy scene.

I was not aware of Jacky. Sorry to offend a Beantown great, but really would you try coffee soup w/ mashed taters? Not even slingblade would go for it.

Oh, I totally agree on that one. Not sure what he was thinking there. Just wanted to make you aware of a little bit of Boston dining trivia.
