Next time the pang for pizza hits and you're traveling the Route 129/62 nexus pop into Kendra & Anthonys in Wilmington. Opening this spring along w/ Starbucks (why does Wilmington rank on Schultz’s list but not Lowell?) the hand-crafted pie take-out shop gives UpperCrust a run for its mulah. Toppings like applewood bacon, caramelized onions, kalamata olives, baby arugula, gorgonzola cheese and grilled chorizo craftily placed on thin crust is about the best za a fussy foodie could pray for in these parts. K&A has a lengthy roster of white pies (sans sauce) such as five cheese, spinach and feta and my fav. the rustic — portabello, sundred toms, fire roasted peps and goat cheese. Was that my stomach grumbling, or yours?
And here's a nice option: take and bake. Order whatever topping you want and pic up a freshly made raw pie you can freeze or pop in your home brickoven. Perfect when heading north to your cabin in the woods this weekend. Warning: take-out only. www.kendraandanthonys.com. 251 Main St., Wilmington.

I mentioned Kendra and Anthony's to two of my friends who have lived in Wilmington their whole lives. Here are their brief responses:
Friend A - "It's pretty good but a little pricey." Friend A reccomend Michaels Place if you want pizza in Wilmington
Friend B - "I had Kendra and Anthony's last weekend. It was good, nothing out of the ordinary or anything. If you like mushrooms they make a really good portabella mushroom pizza. It's better than the usual canned crap."
Friend B reccomended Pizza Mia

IMO, Upper Crust is one of the more overrated/overhyped/overpriced mini-chains to come out of Boston in years. I don't know what to bash more, the skimpy amount of toppings, the crust which amounts to not much more than a glorified cracker, or the smarmy attitude that permeates the staff at various locations, like somehow you are privileged to be there. People buy into the hype and the glossy ads in the Improper Bostonian, but I don't. $21 worth of pizza should fill up 2 adults!

Have not been to Salvatore's in Lawrence...it's Sal's pizza in all other location. I went to Tripolis over the weekend...an entire tray of cheese pizza that would feed at least 8-10 for $27.00. Not for everyone: I love it and my daughter thinks the sauce is too sweet!

I'll also vouch for Salvatores (I have in the past on this blog as well). The food is good and reasonably priced. Sizable menu. The atmosphere is upscale enough to feel special without being stuffy. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside - an old textile factory (durr) with exposed brick, hardwoods, etc. Every time I go, I say to myself "why can't a guy from Lowell buy up a mill complex and turn it into a restaurant/function/office space like this guy has?" and then I remember, you can't see downtown Lowell from a highway, and we don't have free parking :-P
