And what's all this hooey over the low-carb diet lowering cholesterol? Again, (not a doctor here) but this just can't be true. I tried the Atkin’s diet years ago and eating all that cheese, nuts, beef made me crazy. And I was never sated. In the past year I've learned to embrace bread, pasta, rice and even potatoes and have never felt better. I haven't gained weight either. I’m sorry, but these studies seem fake to me. It must have been paid for by the beef association of Omaha er something. I want to hear from carb-club dropouts. Was eschewing wheat and flour really all that effective?

A guy I work with lost a ton doing South Beach and has kept it off, granted he looks like one of those 2,000 year-old mummies they pull out of the sand every now and then.
I tried it and after 2 weeks started ralphing (once in a bookstore!) and was very angry all the time. I looked into it and someone did do a study about carbs releasing chemicals in your brain that made you feel good, so it may have been related to that.
You're right, all the salads, steaks and cheese ommlette's in the world wouldn't have stopped me from climbing over my own grandmother to get 1 Burtucci's roll!
I tried atkins shortly after college. I had tremendous results and my cholesterol dropped 20 points from 201 to 180. The truth is that it's not a realistic diet for me. Grocery shopping trips were uber expensive, and many restaurants don't cater to the diet.
That is precisely what I thought this morning as I watched the news. Poppycok! I'm not even close to British..but I love that word.
There is NO way that can be true. I think the Atkins diet has lost it's popularity and they needed a little study to boost sales.
Oh and the part about it being better than the mediterranean diet...Wow! now, that's far fetched! The mediterranean diet has always been associated with longer life spans, not to mention they say that it lowers the risk of diabetes.
I LOVE BREAD, PASTA, AND CARBS! Say it with me sistah!
I have to say, I found Atkins incredibly effective... but impossible to stay on. I lost about 25 pounds so it pretty much rocked. However, I will say that working out and eating in moderation is (almost) equally effective in keeping it off. I think it's great for a jumpstart though. And my cholesterol was stellar while on it but I'm not prone to problems either. Just one gal's experience though!
I am in the health field. Guess who paid for funding of the study? Atkins Foundation.Do not be surprised...happens frequently in all fields of medicine
I don't think I'd want to live in a world without carbs, so I never tried the Atkins diet. But, I have just read (or listened to the audiobook, actually) "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan and would recommend it. I think it can be useful in making food and diet decisions.
Basically, to eat "real food", as fresh, local and unprocessed as possible. It breaks down a lot of the food fad diets, such as low fat or no carb, and describes their hazards.
The tagline is "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." There's a good description of it on the NPR website: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=17725932
