I just had a fine lunch at a new outdoor cafe in the Acre. It's not technically new, it's the Olympos Bakery. But after 85 years, they've added a lovely little outdoor cafe w/ umbrella tables. It's hardly Christies in Newport, (you won’t see or be seen) which is why it works on days when you have to dodge out between deadlines. I had the Greek salad which comes w/ fresh slabs of Feta, nice greens, peppers, tomatoes, onions and two (count em) rolls fresh from their ovens. I knew this Greek clan tossed a great salad, but here’s what I didn’t know: They have iced coffee worth reckoning with. Much better than the sharply bitter brew I begrudgingly endured earlier this week from a certain green establishment. My perfect pick-me-up came to around $8, which is fine by me. But what really made it was the setting. The only view was George The Tailor, but it was quiet and strangely relaxingly. If sitting outside on Broadway in the noon-day sun sounds deadly, then call me a masochist. I loved it. In addition to the decadent cream-filled pastries behind the case, the Olympos has a pile of trashy mags you can flip through. Perfect summer "reading" for a Friday when you wish you were on Block Island, Martha's or ACK w/ everybody else. Got another hidden haunt that strangely satisfies?
One good lunch
