Bon appetit

images.jpg This am Im leaving the Mill for Montreal. Hitting the Jazz Fest and cafe au lait circuit. I will post from the food capital of the world all the tasty bites I encounter. Poutine, that French guilty pleasure, is part of my focus for a food story in next week's sun. I hear you can order this luscious lard fest at Walmarts up there. Umm. Anyone had this fried-gravy fiasco? Not something you crave in early summer, but for the love of journalism, I will find the best in the city. A local foodie told me smoked meat is another Montreal must. They don't tell ya what kind of meat they are smoking, that's part of the fun. Food is sport up in old Montreal. There is also something about a jazz fest (the largest in the coutnry) kicking off tonight, but really it's all about the food, the coffee and the crosiants. I'll tell you how far the dollar goes against the loony. Still cheaper than a visit to Paris (I hope). Since many Lowellian's have ties to this fair city I'll take any travel tips you can dispense. Au revoir.

Had some great smoked meat up there during a Montreal visit about 15 years ago. I think it's akin to pastrami. There is also a fab diner up there in the old Montreal area - I think it might have been called Rockets - where you get breakfast all day and they have bagels, cr. cheese and smoked salmon to die for.
If you get a chance, go outside Montreal to the nearby countryside and enjoy traditional Franco cuisine - tortiere, beans sweetened with maple syrup, pea soup and such that people who love the stuff at Cote's Market here in Lowell adore.
A lot of the food is heavy, but you'll walk it off in that walkable burg.
Also, check out the underground metro system. Each stop is a veritable city with shopping and restaurants galore. Since winter's bitter cold, many Montrealeans live underground.

GG, don't forget about the great bagels I heard they have up there. I haven't been to Montreal but did have my 1st poutine experience in Quebec. Oh, my--a nightmare for the cardiovascular system but a feast for the mouth. Thanks for searching it out in the dead of summer for us--your readers.
Also make sure to have some maple-syrup pie--a great dessert for sure.

If you value good duck, but don't fear heart Disease, run don't want to Au Pied de Cochon. The world's greatest duck, it really is amazing. They have a Poutine served with Foie Gras....

My husband and I spent our Memorial Day weekend in Montreal and visited several very good restaurants, including Les Heritiers and Yoyo; I highly recommend both! They are a bit off the beaten path of either new downtown or old port, but the locals know best.

Hi GG. Another nice side trip on the way up is in Montpelier,VT at the New Englanf Culinery School. Montpelier is rather quaint and the school has a few different restaurants and a bakery/coffee shop. It was a nice surprise! Here's their site http://www.neci.edu/.
I liked it there so much we made a stop at the ICA in New York
(right next to the FDR Estate in Hyde Park). We were passing thru but these little forays make it memorable.
