A diverse hatrick

I've been so wrapped up in the C's final frenzy (is it over yet?) I've neglected my duties as a food blogger, who's suppose to be up to the minute on the best bytes. So to reclaim my standing, I have a trove of restaurant news for you. Three new ethnic eateries opened in Lowell w/in the last month. Each more diverse than the last. Secrets, 11 Salem St., is a Portuguese/American break./lunch joint that serves up some great omelets w/ chorico and mozzarella, eggs w/ linguica and such. Their lunch special, the Alcatra, is roasted steak w/ thick fries and rice for $11.95. Intriguing sides like recois, a tuna turnover, and a sunny, Caribbean decor makes this a nice break from the formica diners in our midst. You can walk here from downtown. Just follow Market Street into the Acre, and it's on your right. It's near Charlie's Tap, a nice reclaimation of the divey Rainbow Cafe. Since this is African Festival weekend, why not prime the pump w/ a taste drive-by at A and H African rest., 405 Lawrence St.? I'm game for anything except goat. Don't know much about A and H, but I liked Kilimanjaro in Lowell, which closed yrs, ago. They had great pepper soup. And if this isn't enough to slake your international urge try new Spanish spot Los Criollos, 416 Suffolk St. corner of Merrimack. Don't think this is trendy tapas, judging from the name and location. So diehard Spaniards should be pleased. Has anyone tried any of these places? Nice to have a few off-the-grid options.

Wow. Nice tips!

I really like the tips....but you might have left off the whole "strap on your bullet-proof vest" comment. Taints the entire community. A little less flippant next time, OK?

Nice to know gourmet gal reads the comments. I agree the "strap on your bullet-proof vest" was uncalled for and just the reason many fine restaurant in the area aren't successful. I guess Nashua is the place to go if you don't want to worry about taking a bullet. Very disappointing.

I read the comments, I post em. I was going for a cheap laugh, i was bottom feeding and Im sorry. I feel completely safe in the Acre, I used to live there and now work here. I walk these streets all the time and always say it's safer than Beantown. The whitebread, sanitized feel of Nashua is a drawback.

Whitebread? What do you have against caucasions, GG?

Seriously though, lighten up people. She was making a joke. As in most humor, there's an awful lot of truth. People don't feel safe in these neighborhoods, often with good reason. Instead of denying the problem, try to help solve it.

Hey, JJF, just leave it alone! You're not helping at all!
