It's friday again and Im shoving off to Maine to find treats in God's country. For the next week my office will be at Gritty McDuffs, but you know how spotty the IT connection is in Maine. Gotta love those Mainiacs for trading the screen for the sky.
So in my absence you have an assignment: let me know about all your fab food finds. The great thing about a blog is its ability to publish w/o me. This space is yours as much as mine and I'd like to come back in a week and hear about your Moonstones forays, the Blue Taleh's new outdoor cafe (this open yet?) and any stabs you've taken at left-for dead places like Fortunatos. Seriously, is this Palmer St. rest. still alive? It's a shame, such prime real-estate and all. They usually perk up this time of year, but last I looked the corner bistro showed no signs of freshening. Anyway use this slate as you see fit. And if anyone knows where to get great fried clams (w/ bellies) on the craggy coast drop me a line. See ya at grittys.
Take it away

Hi GG,
Lucky you, I'm a Mainiac, too.
As for fried clams with bellies, there's a clam shack right by the bridge in Kennebunkport that's always mobbed and was written up in the Globe a few years ago as a not to miss place. Also one by the Nubble Light in York. And another in Kittery Point. They shouldn't be that crowded this week, pre-Memorial Day.
I hear, too, from a friend in Damariscotta that all the lobster pounds are open on the Pemaquid Penninsula now. Great lobster, probably clams, too. If you want to try a good indoor place up there, I suggest the Damariscotta River Grill. Ate there a month ago and it was memorable.
As for me, I'm trying the new Cast Iron Kitchen, recently opened in Maynard at the site of old Quarterdeck Rest. It's getting lots of buzz in the southern end of Sun realm. They get all their seafood from Quarterdeck fish market, still open. Plus all the meat is locally produced, hormone-free, etc. etc. Will fill in.
Have a blast,
Foodie

We lived in Portland for 2 years and really loved it there. Tremendous places to eat. Really need to start the day at Becky's Dinner on the water. Best breakfast in town. For lunch i would hit Flat Bread (which even as a New Yorker) i feel is tremendous pizza. Finally at dinner you really need to step it up and hit Fore Street. One of the best places to dine on fresh seafood on the east coast.
Hi GG;
Been meaning to write 2 U. I really enjoy your blog.I work on Middle ST and Fortunato's is still empty. Owners not doing much to improve the food.
Have a place in OOB.Try Ken's there or the Clambake..oh so good!
Have fun
DeMillo's is the place to be in Portland.
GG...
Lucky you! Maine would be awesome right now. But thanks largely to you and your blogoholic nature, moonstones "soft" opening...not so soft!
But UNLIKE Cobblestones 14 years ago, we made it through with only two emotional breakdowns, (I'm better now), no punches thrown, and no lost staff members!!!
All the above suggestions for Maine are good ones. In case you haven't been however, and you are feeling special, and you have any money left...Arrows just outside of Ogonquit is one of the finest dining experiences around. On par with Clio, Radius and Sorrelina. If you go, I'd love to buy your wine! (you will need the extra cash)
A great "last night of vacation and I deserve this night out" type of place.
Enjoy the rest of the week.
Scott
GG,
Hope Maine going well. Did you get to eat any Pemaquid oysters? They're being harvested now and looked mighty good on a Chronicle piece last night.
Tried Cast Iron Kitchen in Maynard and was impressed. Sun is featuring it as an On the Menu today. It may be a jaunt from Lowell (about 25 miles). But worth the trip. The tapas items are well-done, nicely presented, very tasty and reasonably priced. You can have one as app. or more as meal. Fun bar, great jazzy background music. Nice find. Try it, you'll like it.
Also sunk teeth into a rack of baby backs last night from new Alpine Butcher. Yummo. Meat falls off the bone tender morsels, rich sauce, and they do all the work. Only $14.99 a rack, well worth it.
Try, too, you'll like.
Happy Mem Day,
