Too early for Cinco de Mayo?

margarita_1_.jpgNever. Especially when the de facto holiday falls on a Sunday. The Mayan gods are messing w/ us this year, but don't worry, crafty restaurateurs are moving the day of the endless margarita to Friday so we can imbibe w/out the worry. Yea!
Dos de Mayo will commence at the Mambo Grill on Merrimack Street on Friday May 2. Bring a mask and enjoy house band Lowercase p, $2 margaritas, tamales, guac this way, and a new pulled-pork sandwich the Baja-style taco shop is rolling out today — the Tango Torta. This fusion bite made w/ avocado, caramelized onions, BBQ sauce and bolillo bread, a tradtional Mexican cracked-wheat roll, sounds like a fine mid-week lunch option. See ya on the sidewalk.
Any other salsa joints getting in on the early De Mayo act? I want to hear from you!

Sorry to say...but Mambo Grill is a shadow of what it was when it first opened.Sadly so. I used to enjoy going there but now it seems all they care about is the live entertainment (which the place is way too small for) and drinks. A few weeks ago a member of my family was playing in a band there - so a half dozen of us went to support him and the band with the intention of having a late supper there - as soon as the band started they told us the kitchen was closed - only the bar was open.........so we walked across the street to Mr. Jalapeno and spent over $100 - they should've taken over the pizza/roast beef place when it was closed for so long - if they want to have room for bands they need more space.

That's a great story about Mr. Jalapeno -- NOT so great for Mambo, though. I have to say, we are REALLY diggin' Jalapeno's. We were just there last night and noticed that they now have homemade chips with their salsa. Saweet! Took them a little while to get to that point so hopefully they'll stick to it. The kind owner was also very receptive to adding vegetarian options (veggie meats instead of real meats) to his meaty menu items. So all you veggies out there, voice your preference to the gracious owners at M.J. They'd like to hear from the non-meat eaters!

I did a test last week where I got the same meal at Mambo and at Mr. Jalapeno's. Mr. Jalapeno's was more expansive (partly because they don't have fountain drinks that you can re-fill) than Mambo. Also the meal at Mambo was much better than Mr. Jalapeno's. I really believe that Mambo offers better food and my loyalty will remain with the original downtown Mexican restaurant.
Plus, the service and management at Mambo is stellar!
