The Boott Mill sandwich is as Lowell an institution as they come. Preceding the Egg McMuffin by a good many years, this gonzo gut-buster at Arthur’s Paradise Diner is a must. This is our Philly cheese steak. If you’ve haven’t been acquainted with this fired egg, bacon, sausage, ham, home fries and cheese on-a-roll wonder, have you been in jail? That’s the question affable owner Paul Delisle asks of his uninitiated customers. Stop into the tiny Worcester dinning this weekend. Hours are 7 to 11 on Sat and 9 to 1 on Sun. Also, (and this is huge) coffee is free at this Bridge Street joint. And it's not bad either. How does the mighty BMS stack up vs. other breakfasts sands around town? I've noticed Olive That & More has a sign outside that says: "Our breakfast sandwiches are better." Are they throwing down the gauntlet to the Boott? Sorry guys, these portable meals didn't fuel mill workers around the clock for nuthin.

Sadly, Arthur's boott mills haven't been very good for years now. Pre-cooked bacon, skin -on potatoes, sloppily assembled. They are nothing like they were back in the day. I'll take the Irish Boot from Fitzy's on Lawrence St. any day.

Speaking of delicious sandwiches. How come up here we can burger only McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's? When I visit and lived in other places there are usually about 7 places to choose from, whether it's Sonic, In-and-Out, Carl's Jr., Hardee's, Checker's, Krystal, Fat Burger, White Castle, and I know I'm forgetting a few. Why do we get ignored?

For great local burgers try the Blue Angus in Dracut. They're not fast food, but will make you happy!

Thanks,
I'll have to check it out. I do love the Rebel Burger at The Old Court and I can walk there too! (Walking home is another story).

Try Salt and Pepper Grill on Mammoth Road (old Two Chefs Location). They make pretty decent burgers with lots of varieties, for not much more than the McD price.

Carl's, White Castle, Hardee's...for the price they are all great for what they are--frozen, machine produced, make believe cheese on mass produced bread--
OC, is certainly a good take in Lowell's only Irish Pub... but the best burger in Lowell, bar none, made fresh every day, purchased from Lowell's own Lowell Provision, served on bread baked fresh ievery day, topped with white cheddar (real) cheese and fried onion strings made fresh everyday... is at COBBLESTONES. Seriously. The first G is for Gourmet folks! Maybe we need a new blog written by...Fast Freddie?
(for the record I will be at the Blue Angus tomorrow...!!)

There's just not enough material in the neighborhood to stick to "Gourmet" 365 days a year. I think a little break for an ice cream, hot dog, or burger (frozen or otherwise) is not unreasonable despite the name of the website. I'd much rather discuss "Lowelly" foods close by than keep it strictly gourmet and find us talking about whatever fantastic dining they have to offer in some far off land. Right?
