Got an interesting lament from a local diner who is furious at himself for waiting this long to try Ricardo's Trattoria in Lowell. "I believed those reviews on yelp that dissed the joint. Never again," he wrote. After seven months of avoiding what has long been considered the best restaurant in Lowell, he finally dined at the Gorham St. hotspot and loved every bite. Especially, it must be known, the calamari. Now he is kicking himself for avoiding Ricky's for so long. Man brings up a good point: Online reviews, vicious tripe, or words to dine by?

That person is right. With the advent of the internet it seems every Tom, Dick and Harry with a mouth to cram food into thinks he's a restaurant reviewer. The main problem is a lot of these people write in superlatives instead of good prose and it can come across that a place is terrible when all someone might be trying to say is "the cole slaw was runny." I'm glad he went to Ricardo's and it's no wonder he loved it. I've seen the un-called-for lambasting some idiots give that place on line. I love Ricardo's!

I definitely agree with the comment about the people who are reviewing to an extent. However, when it comes to food, it's always a personal experience. And...when it comes to service one never knows what one will get. I personally love Ricardo's and have always had great food and great service. I recommended it to a friend of mine who had the complete opposite experience. She said she had terrible service and that she wasn't so thrilled with the food for the price. My dear friend is definitely entitled to her opinion and I don't think I would dismiss it either, as am I.

Amazingly, I had never tried fried calamari until I had it at Ricard's recently and now love it! The Lobster Ravioli is my absolute fav!!

Speaking of calamari, while I too love Italian style, I had an order at Blue Talah for the first time last weekend and it rocked. A light, tempura style lends a less heavy taste. great app for sharing. Dumplings are good here too.

I like the online reviews and I participate in Yelp and other places like it. Sure, you need to be able to weigh all the comments and form your own conclusion because, as others have said, dining is a highly personal experience. The experience at any restaurant can vary, too, so it's not uncommon for even very good restaurants to have one or two posts citing a negative experience. If you're unfamiliar with a town or a venue, I think the online reviews are helpful in exploring your options.
