Who has the best buns in town? The cutest cakes? Peter from Billerica poses this intriguing something to chew on. I haven't thought about Lowell bakeries simply because there are so few. OK, OK, the Portuguese Bakery on Gorham St., is a local fav. But what else we got? The Brazilian Bread House is not a bakery in my opinion. I don't know how they stay in biz. But today is Friday (and a Good one at that) so I will try and keep this post Christ-like. If I have to pick a flour house in our midst I'm going w/ Bittersweet Bake Shoppe in Tyngs, or the relatively new Buono Panini in the B-ric. I went in there last wkend and the forest cakes looked perfectly decadent. Word is a new dessert cafe "may" open in Kearney Sq. along the canal next to Blue Taleh (ethics alert: Sun pub. has ties here), but I have heard nothing def. Would be great if it turned out to be like Finale in Boston/Hav. Sq. A dessert emporium w/ cordials and caps. You know, something for the post-theater crowd.
What's your bakery of choice?

I hate to do it, but I've gotta give Buono Panini a thumbs down. I've gone several times and sampled an array, from the breakfast sammies to the lunch panninis and while the food gets a B- in my book, it's the service that gets to me. No smiles, hardly a hello, the staff seems cold and frantic. Maybe they're still getting their feet wet.
But in the spirit of positive thoughts today, I will say that at a request of "add more veggies" they piled on the best grilled pineapple ever on my panini and it was fabulous.

I got about a dozen random (well, based on appearance alone) cookie/pastry things from Portuguese Bakery to bring to a freind's. we loved all of them. I don't know the name but there was a rasberry sort of double helix twisty deal that was terrific, and a chocolate one as well that we all liked. I will return soon for a big loaf of Portuguese sweet bread.
Apart from Oriental de Cuba in Jamaica Plain, our own Bread House does make the BEST Cuban sandwiches have had since leaving Miami 12 years ago. Everyone else is tempted to put there own "spin" on a Cuban but Bread House sticks to the recipe and it is all the better for it.

Delicias Paisas on Bridge Street makes some good Columbian baked goods. Of course I can not remember the Spanish names of the ones I've tried.
Good Ole Yum Yum in Dracut has a good Scali bread.
