I'm ready (are you?)
Yeah, I'm ready for some NFL football, even if it's pre-season.
Channel 5's got the Patriots-Buccaneers at 7:30 p.m. and Channel 4's got the national game, Bills vs. Saints at 8 p.m.
If that doesn't interest ya, there's always Justin Timberlake tonight at the Garden. Let's hope he brings sexy back to Boston.
Later,
Andy

Deadwood might not be dead
One of HBO's best TV series (which was canned too early) might return in the form of two two-hour movies. We've heard this before, but here's a link that gives fans hope.
Have a good one,
Andy

The NBA Draft, a scared wife, the media & more
My better half walked into our home last night around 8:30 and I can’t blame her for immediately darting upstairs.
Here’s what she saw: Me at the kitchen table, furiously typing my thoughts about the Celtics’ trade for Ray Allen in a live NBA Draft chat room.
I’ve also got the big plasma tuned to ESPN, which is competing with commentary from Sports Radio WEEI-AM and, AND a live podcast.
Somehow, I managed to listen to all three broadcasts — over the Internet, TV and radio — and argue with some dude over the Web about the trade. It was kind of loud and overwhelming. Welcome to Casa de Ravens, a.k.a. NBA Draft Central! Sorry, honey!
I woke up this morning thinking I’d put together some essay on how last night was yet another example of New Media. There’s loads of outlets — cell phones, computers, TV, newspapers, blogs, podcasts, radio — and it’s turning the business upside down. But we already know that, so let’s talk about the draft — that’s more fun.
As a former sports writer, I haven’t injected the Ravin’ with Ravens blog with enough sports chat. Hey, it counts as entertainment, right?
Here are my thoughts on the trade, which netted the Celts an All-Star in Allen: I hope there’s more to come. I think the C’s are now one big trade away (isn’t everyone, though?) from making a serious run at the Eastern Conference title.
If Danny can move Big Al, and some lesser parts for Kevin Garnett — DO IT! A three-headed monster of KG-Pierce-Allen would make the Celts instant contenders in the East, which is weaker than Kevin Durant on the bench press.
But, winning the East doesn’t mean all that much when you consider the West is king. However, you never know what can happen in a seven game series. I could go on, but I’ll spare you another sports cliché — you’ll get enough of those this weekend from almost EVERYONE with a microphone or computer.
Have a good weekend!

Thursday's TV picks
NBC gives viewers every chance in the world this summer to catch-up on the funniest show on TV, “The Office,” which stars Acton’s Steve Carell.
Viewers can catch three classic episodes tonight (WHDH-TV, Channel 7) at 8:30, 9 and 9:30. If you’ve been on the fence about the show (which some have considering its OK ratings that should be a lot BETTER) do tune into the 8:30 p.m. episode where Michael (Carell) experiences a panic attack — classic stuff there.
Other Thursday TV highlights include:
“Star Wars IV: A New Hope” (5:45 p.m., HBO-HD)
NBA Draft (7:30 p.m., ESPN)
“My Name is Earl” (8 p.m., NBC)
“Ugly Betty” (8 p.m., ABC)
Thanks for all your e-mails about my front page story the other day about “Harry Potter” mania. For those of you who don’t get The Sun (!) below is my story:
By Andrew Ravens
aravens@lowellsun.com
The final Harry Potter book hits store shelves July 21 and fans of the wizardry series gear up by doing what else?
They reread the first six books at a furious pace, of course.
Chelmsford’s Becky Krupkoski just polished off the first five novels (some of which exceed 600 pages) in four weeks. The 14-year-old is now rereading the sixth installment, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which took her less than 24 hours to finish the first time around. She expects to devour the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, in similar fashion.
“I can’t wait for the book or the movie,” said Krupkoski, who called July the longest month of her life. She’s not kidding.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth book and latest movie, comes to theaters on July 13 and it’s hard to determine what fans are more excited about: The release of another movie or the final novel from English author J.K. Rowling.
Chelmsford’s Alex Dews, 15, will dress up as a Hogwart’s student — sporting stockings and a full robe — when she attends the movie’s midnight premiere.
“I like going to the midnight showings,” said Dews, who works part time at Chelmsford Public Library. “All the funny people go. It’s going to be funny.”
Dews next week plans to start reading all six books for what she calls the “sixth or seventh time” in preparation for the new movie and Deathly Hallows. She figures, depending on her work schedule, to finish the series in about a week.
Dews thinks Rowling is ending the Potter series at just the right time — stretching a mystery or fantasy series too long makes it vulnerable and uninteresting, she said.
“I have a feeling she’s (Rowling) not done completely in the Harry Potter universe,” said Dews. “I’ve read books where authors will use the same universe to create new characters. There might be a new character who runs into Harry, but it (the story) wouldn’t be about Harry.”
Harry Potter fan Paul Oliver, 13, of Wilmington, also doesn’t sound too disappointed that the end is near.
“I’m going to read them all over again,” he said of the books. “It’s always a new adventure to me.”
Oliver is a regular guest of Harry Potter discussion groups held at the Wilmington Memorial Library, where everyone makes predictions about the series conclusion.
Susan MacDonald, Wilmington’s children’s librarian, runs the discussions and hasn’t found anyone who is really upset that the end is near. She also indicated that most readers believe Harry will survive.
“I haven’t seen anyone depressed yet,” she said.
Still, there’s help for anyone needing a Potter fix as the library tonight at 7 will host a predictions and support group.
Maureen Foley, head of children’s services at Chelmsford Public Library, has read every book three times in preparation for a July 7 Potter discussion she will host.
Foley says the Potter books increase children (and adult) reading and encourage readers (especially kids) to reach for thicker books with challenging vocabulary.
“Children know these books in such detail — it’s breathtaking,” she said. “This is a cultural phenomenon. I hope parents recognize the special time we are living in. We have a month to go and the end will be known. That’s why the speculation is fascinating — Is Snape good or evil? Will Harry live?”
Becky Krupkoski’s mom, Debbie Krupkoski, who teaches reading at the Lincoln School in Lowell, also appreciates what Rowling’s stories have done.
“I was skeptical at first,” said Debbie Krupkoski, who predicts Harry will not survive. “But as I got into it I picked up the first book and it really draws you in. The wonderful characters, thinking about what could happen — it’s incredible.”
For the first time, Debbie Krupkoski will bring Becky and her other daughter, Amanda Krupkoski, 24, to the Midnight Madness Potter book release party at Barnes & Noble in Nashua that starts at 6 p.m. on July 20.
Dews will also be there in Nashua with her 10-year-old brother, Peter Dews, to buy the last Harry Potter book. She also has some good advice for any midnight newbies.
“Some kids find the last sentence (of the newly released book) and shout it out loud,” said Dews, who has a plan to avoid hearing the ending. “I’ll bring earplugs and my iPod and play it very loud.”
Let’s hope there are no spoilers out there.

There’s plenty of other fantasy authors and books to dig into once the Harry Potter series wraps up on July 21 with the release of the seventh and final novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Maureen Foley, head of children’s services at the Chelmsford Public Library, recommends The Lord of the Rings, Eragon or Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising series.
Chelmsford’s Alex Dews, who also works at the Chelmsford library, suggests Potter fans should check out authors Tamora Pierce, Garth Nix, Cornelia Funke and Diane Duane.
“I’m not at all concerned that kids will stop here (Potter series),” said Foley. “People read Harry for all different reasons and they’ll go in all different directions.”

Jury is still out on "John"
HBO’s new surfing series “John From Cincinnati” is ruining an older series, “Deadwood.” Both HBO shows come from creator David Milch, who hit a homerun with “Deadwood” — a Western — and a fly out with “John,” the story about a strange dude (is he God?) who suddenly shows up in a California surfing family.
The language of “Deadwood” was dirty. Swearing was everywhere and every character spoke in odd sentences. Every sentence seemed to begin with the word “Being.” I didn’t mind it, because I thought that’s just how everyone talked out there in the Old West.
Well, I think I was wrong because the actors in “John” are speaking in those same (now annoying) sentences. I guess this is Milch’s cute little thing that he does. Well, it worked in “Deadwood,” but it doesn’t work here. Still, I’m giving “John” a few more episodes before I surf to another channel on Sunday nights.
Tonight’s TV highlights:
“Office Space,” 8 p.m., E!
“Big Love,” 9 p.m., HBO.
“The Closer,” 9 p.m., TNT

Miserlis takes center stage
Lowell native George Miserlis will sing with "Seinfeld's" Jason Alexander and the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl tonight in Cali. Miserlis, a regular guest star on NBC's "Scrubs," is part of the venue's "Opening Summer Night" honoring Placido Domingo.
Good luck, man!

"Evan" is kind of "Almighty"
I gave "Evan Almighty" 2 1/2 out of 4 stars. Generous? Probably, but for a PG-rated movie this had people of all ages laughing at the Boston press screening I attended — which is pretty cool. Here's my take:
By Andrew Ravens
aravens@lowellsun.com
Steve Carell’s career took off in 2003’s "Bruce Almighty" when he stole the spotlight from comedy superstar Jim Carrey with a supporting role as quirky newscaster Evan Baxter.
The Acton native reprises his role as Evan, who is newly elected to Congress and anointed by God (Morgan Freeman) to build an ark in the family friendly $175 million comedy "Evan Almighty," which opens in theaters today.
The PG-rated and special effects-laden flick sparked consistent chuckles from children and adults of all ages at a recent press screening in Boston.
The film’s broad comedic appeal and Carell’s ("The Office," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin") star power likely mean it will do just fine at the box-office, despite some inevitable poor reviews.
The film relies too much on generic jokes — bathroom humor and physical mishaps are everywhere — but there’s a collection of one-liners and scenes with Wanda Sykes ("Curb Your Enthusiasm") and the emerging Jonah Hill ("The 40--Year-Old Virgin") that make it worth a look.
The film opens with Evan saying his good-byes on-air at the television station in Buffalo, N.Y. A brief montage explains Evan won the election and promised voters that he would “change the world.”
God takes notice and convinces Evan to build an ark — much like Noah did — to prepare for a pending flood. (Freeman seems uninterested and coasts through his role as the Almighty One, which he first played in 2003’s "Bruce").
Evan’s wife (Lauren Graham), three children and staff (Sykes, Hill and John Michael Higgins) think their boy has gone crazy. The congressman’s beard grows back seconds after shaving and his hair sprouts at uncontrollable lengths (Sykes wonders if he’s been “shooting up Rogaine”). God also makes Evan wear a robe, which completes the Noah transformation.
Evan’s biggest trouble comes from congressman Long (John Goodman), who wants the junior congressman to co-sponsor an environmentally unfriendly bill.
The plot is a bit hazy as director Tom Shadyac ("The Nutty Professor") tries to send a message about the environment and family togetherness that quickly gets washed in the shuffle.
The circus is the giant wooden ark and its guests — dozens upon dozens of real animals (kids will love all the animal gags). After watching a few scenes with the wildlife and big boat, you’ll understand the film’s considerable budget.
Viewers will recognize most of the supporting class, which also includes former "Saturday Night Live" star Molly Shannon and "The Office’s" Ed Helms.
Shannon has a few funny scenes as an obnoxious, hyper real estate agent, while Helms plays an annoying and easily frightened TV reporter — not much of a leap from Andy Bernard, whom he plays on "The Office" opposite Carell.
Although some of the jokes sound and look familiar, there’s no denying "Evan Almighty" is a fun summertime popcorn flick for the entire family.

Is Evan almighty?
Loyal Sun readers know that we like to keep track of locals making it big in Hollywood. Acton's Steve Carell ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin," NBC's "The Office") certainly falls into that category.
I'll be attending a press screening tonight of Carell's new movie, "Evan Almighty" — the sequel to "Bruce Almighty" — the movie that really launched Carell's comedy career.
The Sun will run my review in Friday's paper and I'll be sure to post it here, too.

What do you think?
We gave readers the chance to chime in with their thoughts on "The Sopranos" finale that airs Sunday night at 9 on HBO. Here's what our readers had to say or write:
A few points:
o the scene with Tony, Bobby and Silvio in the restaurant when they put their fists up - the music in the background is from "Godfather III." "Sopranos" has always run a parallel to the "Godfather" films. The christening scene at the beginning of the season with Christopher's baby is reminiscent of that film. The daughter was killed in "Godfather III" - Meadow will definetly be killed.
o Paulie is involved in taking Tony down. He didn't have any urgency in filling up the plastic bags with food when Tony did at the Soprano McMansion house and commented on the legs of AJ's girlfriend.
o Silvio isn't dead - how could they give the cousins the wrong address to kill off Phil? I think Silvio who has been the good boy all along has collaborated with Pauly and Phil to take down Tony because his leadership has been weekened by the gambling (since Vito was a primary money make and the cash flow dimished) and the asbestos issue and AJ's suicide attempt - Pauly and Silvio have maybe thought Tony has become a weak leader and collaborated with Phil to join the families and take Tony out . Silvio isn't dead - if they were on alert with targets on their back why didn't he have his gun readily accessible? The shots didn't look like they killed him.
o AJ gets upset after his sister is killed and goes after Pauly or Phil to kill them.
o Some shoot out at the estate house where Carmella might be staying because we haven't seen her parents yet this season and all the characters have had a "goodbye" scene. Maybe they get killed at the estate house - maybe there is a shootout there.
o Tony goes to the FBI informant to tell all after Meadow is killed.
o They go into witness protection.
Suzanne Page
Lowell
Here's another opinion:
Hi
Tony will survive. The cynic in me says there is too much money tied up in the Sopranos franchise for HBO to kill him off. Without Tony, how can they have the big Soprano's Reunion Movie a few years from now? You know, the one beginning with a reception by the ever famous Soprano pool celebrating the christening of Meadow's first child. Back to where it all began.
For Tony to survive Phil will have to die and Tony's guys will have to win the gang war. I just hope that Sil and Paulie (two of my favs) don't die either. Note- Sil is "in bad shape" but not dead as last weeks show ended. I think that is a good sign.
Look forward to reading your article,

The Sopranos...The End
Hey,
I'm looking to speak with anybody — ANYBODY! — about predictions for the final "Sopranos" episode that airs Sunday night on HBO. Call my office line at 978-970-4622 or drop me an e-mail at aravens@lowellsun.com.
I don't want to spoil too much about last night's episode because I know some haven't watched it yet (just found out the hard way after talking loudly about some deaths that a co-worker was unaware of). Oops. So, I'll give you time to catch the second-to-last episode on On Demand and then you can get back to me.

The doctor is still in...
* Yup. There's still one more season finale left from the winter TV slate: Check out the final "House" of the season tonight at 9 on Fox.
* Major props to Comcast, which recently added A&E, HGTV and the Food Network to its HD lineup. Most of the content is in full widescreen mode, always a major plus.
* If you missed it on Sunday, catch HBO's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" tonight at 11.
* Are there any R.E.M. fans out there? The band just began recording its 14th album, which is due out sometime later this year. The band will play five "working rehearsal" concerts June 30-July 5 in Ireland. Wish I lived there.
* "Deadliest Catch" continues tonight at 8 on Discovery.

The Beatles...
are being covered everywhere tonight, and the covers...not so good.
Waiting on the winner right now. Looks like they are going to run a little past 10 p.m. Mmmm.
New record: 74 million votes.
And here we go...the winner is: Jordin Sparks!
Posted by Andy Ravens at 9:52 PM | Comments (0)
Taylor Hicks...
is on the stage now. He looks bad and sounds bad. Can I change the channel, please?
He's snapping, singing and dancing.
And now here comes...Jordin Sparks and Ruben Studdard! He's looking good and lost a ton of weight. These two make a nice pair.
Commercial time!

Sanjaya is back...
They're doing a little tribute to Sanjaya now. The man who made it further than most thought. He's now performing with Joe Perry from Aerosmith, a band that jumped the shark a long time ago, but is now sinking to a new, ugly level.
That fan blowing Sanjaya's hair is pretty lame.
And now here's Green Day with a live performance. Good stuff, I'm just wondering why they'd want to be on this show? Oh well. Are they sell outs? Maybe. No punk rock band in the 70s would appear on a show like this, would they?
Posted by Andy Ravens at 9:16 PM | Comments (0)
Carrie Underwood...
She's on the stage now. Wow, I think she's the most talented winner of "American Idol," and tonight's performance puts an "!" mark on that! She's singing "I'll Stand By You."
Six million album sales...that's what Carrie Underwood was just recognized for.
Posted by Andy Ravens at 8:59 PM | Comments (0)
Tony Bennett...
is on the stage. He's my favorite American Idol. :)
Melinda Doolittle...what a voice! She deserved to win. Oh well, she'll be all right.
Posted by Andy Ravens at 8:47 PM | Comments (0)
Top Six Girls...
are performing now. Sounds good. They're singing "I Heard It Through The Grape Vine." Very nice. Lookin' forward to the group's singing tour.
Gladys Knight is now joining them..wow, she sounds and looks great.
Paula's clapping and singng...her nose looks better. :)

Beatboxing 101
Blake is a beatboxing with two other dudes right now, including Doug E. Fresh. Sounds great. This kid's got a future album regardless of tonight's outcome.

Top 12
Seacrest tells us that our Top 12 favorites are back...
It's been five years since she took the title, but here she is after 14 million record sales...Kelly Clarkson...singing her new song...pretty good. Word is she wrote this one herself.
Jerry Springer is in the house...I think I just saw him.
Golden Idols, which are some sort of wierd joke:
Best Presentation Award goes to: Margaret Fowler, some crazy woman in a yellow suit.
Wow, Fox really doesn't know how to stretch two hours...
And now the Top Six Guys singing...wow, there's Sanjaya.
Smokey Robinson on the stage now...he's begging us to stay. Smokey looks good in a nice white suit. But it's not after Memorial Day!!
Paula's lovin'. She's dancing up a storm.

Let the games begin...
We are live from the Ravens Media Center, awaiting the start of the season finale of "American Idol."
stay tuned...
160 million are watching tonight's episode, according to Seacrest....
"I Saw Her Standing There," sung by the two finalists. It really shows Jordin is the better singer, but Blake has got that "stage appeal."
According to some radio stations, Jordin will win by a wide margin...but that could just be a nasty rumor...

It's the calm before the storm...tune in here tonight for more live blogging during the season finale of "American Idol," which airs at 8 on Fox. I'll be back.

Jordin's Lookin' Good
Celts get the fifth pick..the bad luck continues...wow.
Back to "Idol"
"This Is My Now," sung by Jordin Sparks. She cried at the end. Rather touching. Judges:
Randy: You were the best singer tonight.
Paula: You have a lot to be proud of. Great night.
Simon: It is a singing competition and you just wiped the floor with Blake on that one.
Jordin looks like she is well on her way. Overall, a good show. I think Jordin will win. She is the best singer. Well, I'm out of here. Check in tomorrow night at 8 for my live blogging during the season finale!
Later,
Andy

Blake's last stand!
This is going by fast, the "Idol" show that is...
4-1, Sox (for those not flipping channels during the commercial breaks!)
Blake is singing "This Is My Now," written by two dudes from Seattle. Blake wears gold shoes. Hee. He has some interesting tats on his arms, too. Girls love the Blake. Judges:
Randy: Pretty good job.
Paula: Great job on the song.
Simon: It was all a little odd. You looked a bit frustrated.
Posted by Andy Ravens at 8:39 PM | Comments (0)
Jordin's Turn
More old photos and videos of Jordin. Oh, how cute.
Jordin will sing Martina McBride's "A Broken Wing." She sings better than Blake. Round Two to Jordin, in my opinion. Crowd seems to love her. I think she's gonna win the whole thing tomorrow night. We shall see. Mrs. Ravin' with Ravens throws her two cents in: "That was really good. I don't like country, but I liked that." Thanks, hun.
Judges?
Randy: Most talented 17-year-old singer I have ever seen.
Paula: You are in great, great vocal voice tonight (that's what she said, word for word).
Simon: He liked it.
Jordin is feelin' good. Seacrest thinks it's a battle. Commericial time!

Blake's Second Song...
So we got some old photos and videos of Blake as a kid and how he became the great beat boxer that he is today...
Blake is up again. He's singing Maroon 5's "She Will Be Loved." Oh Blake! You really can't sing, dude. He can't hit the high notes. Jordin is going to take Round Two. I'm calling it now. Yeesh. It's tough to watch Blake when he's not beat boxing.
Randy: He likes it! Huh?
Paula: You sounded great.
Simon: It was good. It was safe. (not as good as the first performance).
FYI: Blake has never seen an "Idol" finale...until now.
Commercial time...

Round One to Blake??
Waiting on a commerical here. Whoa! 4-0 Sox. Mike Lowell just went deep (I missed that one).
All righty, back to Fox, let's see what we have here. Long commericial break. At least three minutes by my count. Time for a "So You Think You Can Dance" promo. Doesn't look too interesting. On the other hand, the season finale of "House" looks good.
Each will sing three songs.
Blake Lewis sings first. He's singing "You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi. He's got that beat box thing going again. Very cool and original. He's moving around a lot. He still can't sing, but he does sound effects just as good as that guy from "Police Academy." Randy Jackson gives him a 10 out of 10 for beat boxing, but everyone agrees he lacks singing, but gives a great performance. Simon liked it.
By the way, Randy Jackson looks like he's wearing a jacket borrowed from Michael Jackson.
And here's Jordin Sparks. She's singing a Christina Aguilera song called "Fighter." Sparks is a better singer, but I think she's boring. She fits the "Idol" champ mold, though. Let's see what the judges say:
Randy: You were stellar.
Paula: You were stellar (original, Paula)
Simon: I'm gonna call Round One to Blake.
Commercial Time!

"Idol" Blog Begins
OK, so if you are like me, you're trying to keep an eye on the Sox-Yankees score (3-0, Sox) and an eye out for the NBA Lottery (EPSN, 8:30 p.m.) where the Celts have a chance for the No. 1 pick. And watch "Idol" all at the same time. Impossible? No way!
So here we go...the show started with 100,000 contestants Wow. Kodak Theater looks packed.
Paula said she tripped over her dog Tulip, broke her nose and Seacrest goes.."So, the ^&*%$ is OK?" Yikes. Line of the night??? Paula looks like she is wearing a ton of makeup and a fake nose. Mmmm.
OK, now we have a recap of Seattle, where both finalists, Blake and Jordin, auditioned.

Live! (from my home)
We'll blog live tonight from the Ravens Media Center during the first part of the "American Idol" finale (8 p.m., Fox). We'll also be on hand during tomorrow night's two-hour "Idol" blowout.
It should be interesting to see how Paula's doing — apparently she broke her nose, but will appear. Mmmm, wonder how she did that? Tripping over her dog? I don't think so...

"American Idol"
**FYI: If you're interested in having your comments heard in my forthcoming "American Idol" story in The Sun e-mail me at aravens@lowellsun.com.**
Idol Breakdown
Melinda Doolittle has the best voice, but America doesn’t care.
The “American Idol” odds on favorite was ousted Wednesday evening, leaving Fox’s big karaoke contest with two remaining contestants: 17-year-old Jordin Sparks and 25-year-old Blake Lewis.
I’ll go out on limb here and predict three years from now you won’t recall anything about Sparks or Lewis, but you will remember Doolittle’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Believe in You and Me.”
But the show never really was about finding a true winner, fulfilling dreams or even the snappy judges: It’s all about the ratings, baby.
While “American Idol” ratings remain off by about 10 percent compared to years past, the show is still ranked No. 1 with an average of 25 to 28 million viewers per episode. Still, a recent episode of Fox’s medical drama “House” bested “Idol.”
But if I were host Ryan Seacrest or judge and executive producer Simon Cowell, I wouldn’t be shaking in my stage boots. There’s still plenty of bad and good singers left to grace the good old tube.
Later,
Andy

You're Out!
NBC today officially canned "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" when it announced its Fall 2007 TV lineup. Also gone is "Crossing Jordan." Smell ya later...
Here to stay?
"Friday Night Lights," "30 Rock," and "The Office." — all good news.
Equally cool news...viewers can expect a "Heroes" spinoff show this fall.
Click here for more about NBC's new lineup.
Don't forget: season finale of "How I Met Your Mother" airs tonight at 8 on CBS, followed by the series finale of "The King of Queens." Do you care? Maybe you do...
I'll try to make it through an entire episode of "24" tonight without making a sarcastic comment, but that will be like trying to remove a coffee stain from an off-white shirt (yes, that happened to me recently and I CAN'T get it out).
I watched "The Omen," HBO's Saturday night new movie of the week this week. It was about as good as the last sentence I wrote — lazy and disjointed.
OK, that's all for now. Time to go blow dry my hair.

Andy

Fightin' Chance
Update on the Micky Ward movie:
The state’s film office believes the big budget movie about boxer Micky Ward’s life still has a chance to be filmed in Lowell if state legislators change a law that places a cap on tax incentives for production companies.
“I don’t think a final decision has been made,” Massachusetts Film Office Executive Director Nicholas Paleologos said. “I think we are absolutely in the running for it. Paramount (Pictures) — they want to make it here, but we have to remove that obstacle.”
Paleologos said he has not heard any opposition to removing the cap. “I understand the governor (Deval Patrick) wants to do it (file legislation) with the speaker and senate,” he said. “We’re waiting for it to be filed.”
Paleologos has also heard rumors that the film’s director, Darren Aronofsky, has quietly scouted parts of Lowell over the past few weeks. “Paramount would not do that if they weren’t serious about making it here,” he said.
The film, tentatively titled "The Fighter," appears to still have a fighting chance to be made here in Lowell.

"Lost" finds the end
It's been widely speculated and finally confirmed: ABC's "Lost" will run for 48 more episodes and end during the 2009-10 season. This is good news for those of us who want answers to the show's curious questions. I doubt every question will be answered within the 48 episodes, but having an "endgame" means we'll likely get some sense of satisfaction.
"Lost" is an interesting show. I've gone through periods where it frustrates me to the highest levels, only to have it bring me back to the "edge-of-my-seat." It's great television. It makes mistakes at times, but overall it's one of those appointment TV programs we all come to enjoy...just like "24" used to be.
Check out this link for more "Lost" info.
Anyone with extra tickets to the Sox-Yankees series in early June — when Clemens likely returns to Fenway — kindly shoot me an e-mail. :)
Enjoy the weather today,

New on Video
Here's a look at a few new DVD movies coming out on Tuesday:
"Music and Lyrics" ($19.99) — Hugh Grant stars as Alex Fletcher, a washed-up singer who is given a few days to compose a hit song for an aspiring teenage star. Drew Barrymore co-stars. Grant — the actor — is by no means “washed up,” but the British actor could use a pick-me-up.
"Because I Said So" ($19.99) — Even by chick-flick standards, this one is brutal. Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore star in the story of a meddling mom who tries to find the perfect man for her youngest daughter. Apparently that involves placing a classified ad. I’ve never read so many amusing one-star reviews about a movie on the Internet. “Prepare to have your IQ painfully sucked out of your brain,” is my favorite line from one reviewer.
"Breaking and Entering" ($21.99) — Jude Law, Vera Farmiga, Juliette Binoche and Robin Wright Penn all appear in this drama about a tumultuous affair (aren’t they all?) and a string of robberies in London. Anthony Minghella ("The English Patient") directs.
"Catch & Release" ($19.99) — First things first: Any time Timothy Olyphant’s (HBO’s "Deadwood") name pops up on my computer screen I am bound by fans of the canceled cable TV series to express my profound love for it and disappointment with HBO for cutting it short. Ahem. "Catch & Release" is a quirky comedy-drama that stars Olyphant, Jennifer Garner, Sam Jaeger and Kevin Smith. It’s worth a look.
"The Painted Veil" ($19.99) — W. Somerset Maugham’s novel comes to life with the beautiful Naomi Watts and Edward Norton, who star as an English couple going through difficult times in 1920s China.

Are you a bad girl?
Folks from Oxygen TV's reality show, "The Bad Girls Club," will hold an open casting call this Saturday from 10 a.m. — 4 p.m. at The Comedy Connection, 1 Faneuil Hall Market Place in Boston.
The show's producers are looking for, well, seven "bad girls," who don't play by the rules to star in the second season of the series. They're looking for females, 21-27 years-old. Good luck.

An Open Letter to HBO
Dear HBO,
I am a huge fan. I love "The Sopranos," "Curb Your Enthusiasm,” "Deadwood," "Big Love," and almost everything else sent my way.
I love Saturday night boxing in HD, comedy specials and original movies. HBO On Demand is also great, as it features plenty of movies and re-runs to keep me up for hours past my bedtime (or deadline).
BUT, I am growing concerned, very concerned, about those at the Home Box Office who feel we need to watch “The Lake House” more than once a week or any other crappy new movies that debut on Saturday nights. Simply put: Network programmers are re-airing the same bad movies way too often. Hello, "War of the Worlds."
“The Lake House,” which stars Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, sent me over the edge. It’s on AGAIN tonight on HBO. Amazingly, TV guide gives it two stars. Wow. I am just amazed by that. This chick-flick is terrible, even my wife agrees.
Please change it up a bit. Dig up some quality movies from the 70s, 80s or 90s. Just because it’s a new movie, doesn’t make it any good or worth showing more than once a week.
A true fan and loyal subscriber,
Andy Ravens

Fixing "24"
This season of “24” jumped way over the shark. In fact, it’s still in the air, clearing entire continents. Enough of my complaining though — with exactly 251 days until Christmas — I offer an early gift to the show’s executives — here’s how to make next season a lot better:
1. Location, location, location. It’s time to switch all the action from Los Angeles to another major city. How about New York, Boston, Philly or Chicago?
2. Nix all of the love interest subplots. No one likes them and they drag the pace of the show.
3. Be a little bit more realistic. We know…we know. We know we have to suspend reality to enjoy the show, but how about making the plot more believable?
4. Bring back Elisha Cuthbert, who plays Jack’s daughter. Hey, she’s worth looking at. Don’t believe me? Check out the picture.
5. No more Palmers in office! Let’s leave the family alone. Whole new president. Whole new cabinet.
6. Enough of the leaks and double agents. Terrorists operate fine without them, and it’s hard to believe there are double-crossing officials so close to an American President or in the military.
7. New enemies. Why not try North Korea or Iran?
8. This is not “The West Wing,” so cut out most of the political babble.
9. Tinker with the timeframe. Instead of 24 hours (one hour per episode), make each episode one day long. “24 Days.” I like the sound of that.
10. Instead of terrorist attacks, how about a full-blown war? How does Jack operate in that environment?
Have a suggestion of your own? Leave a comment, dude.

Fletch is On (tonight!)
Chevy Chase is one of those comedic actors I’m truly sad to see fade away. Chase was at his all-time best in 1985’s “Fletch,” which airs tonight at 8 on AMC. The 1989 sequel, which isn’t as good, “Fletch Lives,” airs immediately after at 10.
Chase is probably more famous for his antics on “Saturday Night Live” and the “Vacation” movies, however, “Fletch” remains his best work.
Does he use the same clueless shtick over-and-over again as Fletch, the Los Angeles newspaper columnist bent on revealing a drug ring? Of course, but it’s still funny. I can’t say why it appeals to me, but it does. I think I’ll have a steak sandwich and a steak sandwich for lunch today. And you know whose tab I’ll put it on.
*EDIT: Forgot to mention the forthcoming "Fletch Won," a prequel that stars a young Fletch on his first major story. Chevy Chase should be involved (hopefully). Zach Braff is rumored to play Fletch.
Tonight’s TV tidbits:
“Drive,” 8 p.m., Fox — Wow. I watched the first 20 minutes of the pilot last night. Wow. That’s all there is to say. Wow, I give this show five episodes before it’s yanked.
“The New Adventures of Old Christine,” 8:30 p.m., CBS — “Seinfeld” curse? That’s an idea about nothing.
“24,” 9 p.m., Fox — The worst season continues…Audrey is alive? No way. Didn’t see that one coming. Here’s a wild guess: We haven’t seen the last of Jack’s dad either. They’ll have to revamp the format next year to win me back — that’s what you get for setting the bar so high.
“Baseball Tonight,” 10 p.m., ESPN — There’s no better baseball round-up show on TV. Worth mentioning, even though it’s only 40 degrees out and raining.
"The Riches," 10 p.m., FX — Love this new show. I'd love it even more if I could get it in HD. C'mon, FX.
Stay dry.

The Real "Jericho" Stands-up
“Jericho,” to my pleasant surprise, finally delivered last night some hard answers to the mystery behind dozens of nuclear attacks on U.S. cities.
Apparently, a bunch of terrorists who don’t get along — but all hate America — joined together to steal bombs and set them off quicker than the CIA expected. Of course, the man behind the devious plan appears to be a CIA executive.
While I applaud the show’s writers and producers for delivering some answers, the plot isn’t as shocking or original as I had hoped for. Still, there’s plenty of time to dress up the old conspiracy angle over the summer. It looks like “Jericho” is here to stay. CBS says there are three episodes left before the big season finale airs.
Tonight’s TV Notables:
“Survivor,” 8 p.m., CBS — Anyone still watching this?
“Ugly Betty,” 8 p.m., ABC — Can you believe ABC had this originally slated to air on Friday nights?
“My Name is Earl,” 8 p.m., NBC — Funny new episode.
“The Office,” 8:30 p.m., NBC — Tonight’s subject: Anger Management. Hehe.
“30 Rock,” 9 p.m., NBC — It took me too long to appreciate this show, but I am on board.
“Grey’s Anatomy,” 9 p.m., ABC — Billed as a new episode, this edition features only flashbacks to memorable moments from the past three seasons.
Have a hit, Red Sox. Have a hit, please.

Happy Days
Happy Red Sox Opening Day everyone! Now, if we can only get the weather to cooperate. I’d like to see temperatures soar into the 70s, a clear blue sky and a gentle southwesterly wind. I guess we’ll have to settle for a high of 47 degrees. Oh well, now I see snow outside!
Loyal readers may want to check out my Page One story about the less-than-talented Sanjaya Malakar’s unlikely rise to the final eight in tonight’s “American Idol,” which airs at 8 on Fox. Local viewers, you’ll find, aren’t too happy with some voters who are bent on voting in the worst singer. If this continues, it looks like Fox may have to tinker with the voting system for next year’s contest.
The TV pickings are a bit slim tonight, as I am not a big fan of “Idol” or “Dancing with the Stars,” which airs at 9 p.m. on ABC.
“House” plays doctor aboard an airplane in a new episode that airs tonight at 9 on Fox. Other than that, I’ll likely catch up on a bunch of saved movies and TV shows that are collecting cobwebs in my DVR cable box.
Cleaning out my digital closet,
Andy

Haha, lol
Lowell Sun scribe Dennis Shaughnessey, who knows a thing or two about the Arts & Entertainment world, passes along on this joke from CBS late night talk show host Criag Ferguson:
"America’s pastime is back. It’s that season again. Big sweaty guys grabbing their crotches, yelling, swinging the baseball bats — that’s right, the new season of the "Sopranos” starts this weekend."

Dating Game
Just a few quick notes: The Sun's "Sopranos" preview will run this Friday. You can access it online (LowellSun.com) or buy the paper (what a concept!). Hope you enjoy today's poll and a big thanks to everyone who participated in the previous ones. We'll have more as Sunday's big premiere gets closer.
UPDATE: (minor spoiler) Tony will be arrested in this Sunday's episode, but the charges aren't what you think. Some are saying the first episode has already leaked online, and details about the first episode have already surfaced in some other newspapers. Some selected press were invited to screen the first epi.
UPDATE No. 2: Comcast confirms this is the first time it has ever offered "The Sopranos" re-runs in HD via On Demand.

"Office" Overload
A couple Thursday afternoon entertainment morsels to munch on:
* If there was ever a time to get into NBC’s “The Office,” seize tonight! The peacock network presents five “Office” episodes (annoyingly interrupted by an episode of the forgettable “Andy Barker, P.I.”) all in primetime.
* Mrs. Ravin’ with Ravens, who is a HUGE “Grey’s Anatomy” fan, is really digging the new show that follows it, “October Road.” I am not.
* Fox features two “Family Guy” episodes tonight at 9 and 9:30.
* “White Chicks,” airs back-to-back on FX at 8 and 10:30 p.m.
* If NESN can broadcast every regular season Red Sox game in high-def, why can’t it do the same for spring training games?
* Speaking of high-def and sports, how great is The Masters in HD on CBS? I can’t wait ‘till next week.
* I haven’t been able to catch any of the “Star Wars” movies on HBO lately. Really, they’re like never on. Can’t find ‘em.
Back to the newsprint, folks.

Sopranos Spoilers!
I promise I won't give too much away, but it's no secret that the first two episodes of HBO's mob drama have already aired before a selected audience. Some of these "big wigs" are spilling the beans. If you don't want to be spoiled, DO NOT read the following tidbits...
1. The first episode, which airs April 8 on HBO, centers around Tony, Carmela, Janice and Bobby. The foursome head to Bobby's lake house in upstate New York for Tony's B-day. Major plot points from the past are revealed in new and exciting ways.
2. The second episodes revolves around the screening of Christopher's horror movie. A main character will die (for real) in this episode.
3. As for how the show will end — that's anyone's guess. Popular theories include: Sil shooting both Tony and Christopher and taking over the family. Carmela and Paulie could also bite the dust. One wild theory floating around the Web: Dr. Melfi is an FBI informant. Whoa.

Lycos is on Fire
Lycos, an Internet stalwart, continues to reinvent itself by diving head first into broadband video content.
The company’s latest endeavor is a partnership with Disney ABC Family Television, as the two media outlets will team to host an online viewing party at abcfamily.com to watch the “Wildfire” series’ finale March 26 through April 1.
Here’s how it works: Fans of the popular TV series can host their own viewing parties by using Lycos’s proprietary watch& chat video platform. So, viewers can set up their own private screening rooms and chat online while they watch the show.
A similar thing happens now on message boards (I’m guilty of following “Lost” and “24” message boards while I watch). The big problem with these message boards is timing. They don’t act in real-time like a chat room. Lycos and ABC are onto something here. Let’s hope the venture works and will be expanded to include other popular TV shows.

Back At It!
Sorry for the late blog entry, folks, but The Sun moved its offices today to Dutton Street and the Internet was down for a few hours. But it's back up now and we are ready to go.
I like the new digs here at The American Textile History Musuem. My cubicle is bigger (and cleaner). Brand new chair, desk and walls --- even a window. Very nice. Very nice. Still have the same old computer, but hey, it's working.
Some quick Monday night TV highlights and then it's back to figuring out how to adjust my new desk chair.
"Dancing With the Stars," 8 p.m., ABC. The mega hit returns!
"Prison Break," 8 p.m., Fox. Sarah considers sacrificing herself (again) for Michael and Lincoln.
"24," 9 p.m., Fox. Can Jack Bauer save the world AND avoid "jumping the shark." Tonight could prove to be a monumental episode...keeping my fingers crossed.

Get Lost
I get a lot of questions about “Lost,” which airs tonight at 10 on ABC. About a year ago, I wrote a story about a very good Web site dedicated to the fascinating (and frustrating) wild mental treasure hunt. So, just for reminders, click here for spoilers, theories, speculation and episode discussions.
Other Wednesday TV highlights:
“Jericho,” 8 p.m., CBS
“Bones,” 8 p.m., Fox
Movie of the Night:
“Detroit Rock City,” 11:35 p.m., Encore — If you liked “Dazed and Confused,” you’ll love this story about a bunch of stoners bent on attending a KISS concert. DVR it if you need to wake up early, dudes.
Time to fill out my NCAA brackets.

One question about "24"
You can read my feelings below...
Posted by Andy Ravens at 12:49 PM | Comments (0)
Does Fox know Jack?
“Has '24' jumped the shark?” The question, which basically means — “Are its best moments over?” — was raised to me about an hour ago by a fellow scribe here at The Sun. My immediate, emotional response was “Yes, yes this is the show’s worst season.”
My assessment might prove true come May, but I’m still holding out hope that all of this is building up to something — something grand. I almost slept through the first boring half-hour of last night’s episode, largely because I could care less about the relationship of former President Logan and his estranged wife. I don’t agree with Fox’s promo dudes who promised last night’s episode would provide the “most shocking moment in ‘24’ history.” That, I guess, turned out to be the former Mrs. Logan stabbing her husband. Ho-hum.
The only shining moment came late in the episode when CTU forces attacked the Russians. Pretty cool stuff. The intense gun fight reminded me of a similar scene that occurred in the streets of Los Angeles in the movie, “Heat,” a Michael Mann flick that starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
It looks like next week we will discover the inevitable, double-crossing mole inside CTU. This is a tired act that can be avoided with more creative writing. Or maybe we’ll be surprised and there is no leak.
Perhaps we’ve become too spoiled and criticism of the show is too harsh. Well, I guess that’s what you get for setting the TV entertainment bar so high. So high, not even Michael Jordan could clear it.
There is still hope. If the series can return to riveting, scary storylines — how about the Middle Eastern family that lives next door to you and turns out to be terrorists! — it has a chance. I’ve said it before, but making the Russians the enemy again is so 1985. How ‘bout China, North Korea or Iran? There’s still plenty of people and countries that hate America. Sleep tight tonight!
Latah,
Andy

Rumors won't take a "Break"
“Prison Break,” and a whole lot of other shows, take a break tonight, while “24” (9 p.m., Fox) and FX’s new series “The Riches” (10 p.m.) offer new episodes. It’s still unclear when the “Prison Break” finale will air, but various reports (online and in print) indicate it will happen sometime in April. According to Fox, there are only three episodes left.
Most of the “Prison Break” season two finale takes place in Panama and there are strong indications that Sara will either be in prison at that time (for helping Michael escape in season one) or will be kidnapped. It’s also unclear whether Paul Adelstein (pictured above), who plays agent Paul Kellerman, will return. He’s rumored to be joining the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy,” which could use a fresh shot of new blood. EDIT: From what we understand Adelstein and Tim Daly ("Wings," "The Nine") are now scheduled to appear in a two-hour show that could lead to a "Grey's" spinoff. (scroll below for more details on that).
Speaking of “Grey’s,” over the weekend I thought of a good storyline to breathe life back into the series and restart Izzy (Katherine Heigl). First off, Izzy needs to get over Denny. No more Denny. He’s dead, get over it. No more baking. So with that established, Izzy goes on a dating tear. No more loosely fitting clothes, just smokin’ hot outfits for our favorite blonde on TV. Soon, the men of “Grey’s” start to notice her, get jealous and then start your token love triangle from there. So there.
And finally, “Heroes” does not air tonight, and will not air a new episode until April 23. Instead, viewers get more than they can handle (two hours worth is too much) of “Deal or No Deal.” Thanks, NBC.

And...we're Back!
What's up, Ravers? I am 90-percent recovered from the MASSIVE surgery I had on my mouth last week. They only took out two wisdom teeth, but those suckers were almost in my sinus cavity. Gross, huh?
My face no longer resembles a basketball, but I am still sporting two black eyes courtesy of all that ripping and pulling. I look like I went one round with “Irish” Mickey Ward.
Quite a few things have happened since I went under the knife (Tom Brady might be having another kid??) so let's review a few entertainment tidbits that have been floating around my mind the last week.
* "24" Let's preface these remarks by stating Fox's franchise show is still one of the best, BUT this season is shaky. The writing is no longer all that original; the show entered dangerous territory with soap opera-like plotlines; and making the Russians the real enemies is so 1983.
* “Lost” ABC promised a “game changer” during last night’s episode — a moment that is intended to flip the series on its back. Didn’t happen.
* “The Class” CBS’ new sitcom concluded its first season this week. The network made a wise move by cutting out some characters and focusing on the interesting ones. That probably saved the series.
* “The Family Guy” and “American Dad” is appointment viewing, my friends. As is “Heroes,” “Prison Break,” “Bones,” and “House.” Kudos to Dave Matthews this week. His guest spot on “House” was solid.
* I rented that magician movie, “The Prestige” the other day. Why didn’t I see that coming? What a twist at the end!
Time to get back writing for the newspaper, but I want to leave you with a little trivia I learned while researching a story about cigars (which appears in this Sunday’s Sun).
Did you know the most cigars ever sold in the U.S. was 11.2 billion in 1973? Last year, 9.8 billion were sold. Yes, folks, we are in another cigar boom.
Latah,
Andy

Marching along...
I hope everyone enjoys the first question of the month. It's a tough one, but fun to think about. I would vote television just because it offers everything: sports; movies; sitcoms; serial dramas; and the news. But it's hard to beat a good novel or some insane video that pops up online.
Onto more pressing matters. This will be my last entry for a little while because I am having my wisdom teeth out tomorrow. I've already had two out when I was a teenager. I'm not sure why they didn't just pull all four suckers then, but now that I'm 30 I guess it's time to yank the rest out. I've rented a couple of movies to watch while I recover and will report back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, feel free to send comments in or shoot me an e-mail at: aravens@lowellsun.com.

Oscar Winners
So...did you print an Oscar ballot last night and play along? I did and things, well, didn't go so well. I picked nine winners last night, but I have to admit I voted more for "who I think should win" rather than "who will win." Big Mistake.
As a result, Mrs. Ravin' with Ravens kicked my ass — she picked three more winners than me. Perhaps we should trade jobs? Not a chance! Oh well, onto a few tidbits from last night's broadcast...
* I'm betting last night's Oscars won't win an Emmy this year. It suffered from some technical issues, including fuzzy sound (and I'm not talking about the intended sound editing jokes).
* Line of the night goes to an ancient Clint Eastwood after he kept screwing up a presentation, "I should have brought my glasses." Yeah.
* Jerry Seinfeld told three or four jokes. Only the first one was funny. The others, about how he can just throw away his trash on the ground at movie theaters, was mean and sounded familiar.
* Martin Scorsese deserved an Oscar...just not for "The Departed." "Goodfellas" is a much better movie.
* How's this? I thought "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Babel" were better than "The Departed." Reason No. 101 why I am not a member of The Academy.
* Jennifer Hudson almost had a wardrobe malfunction while performing a "Dreamgirls" song last night. Her chest was flyin' all over the place. Yikes.
* I thought it would have been really cool last night if Al Gore announced what he still may announce. But I guess "Meet the Press" is a better venue.
* Your host, Ellen D., waving a script at "Marty" was classic. Overall, I thought she was pretty funny, but lose those white shoes, girl.
That's all for now. Back to work I go.

Grey's Anatomy: Location to be Determined
The Wall Street Journal reports ABC is fast tracking a "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff show that will feature Dr. Addison Montgomery-Shepard (Kate Walsh). The Web is full of speculation that the Grey's will turn into a franchise with several spinoffs, similar to CBS' CSI series.
There's no word on who will join the cast, but the show will air its pilot this May. In other Grey's news, there's still speculation that major cast members will be killed off — but with this new twist, perhaps they'll just switch hospitals and cities.
If you are curious about the long time between posts I've got an easy answer — I was on vacation. I have a tan, but it's fading faster than you can say, "Kiss me, I'm Irish."

Lost Re-Cap
I'll eat my words from yesterday. "Lost" was pretty good last night. Pretty, pretty, pretty good, Larry David.
In fact, the first episode of this season's second half reminded me of Season One, when the action, drama and surprises shocked your heart. There was no better moment last night than when Juliet's ex-husband is struck by that bus, which curiously had the words "Apollo" splashed over it. Mmmmm.
We also learned more about that evil Hanso Foundation (which is likely backing some biotech company that's not located in Oregon) and that Juliet, is in fact, a prisoner of the "Lost" island just like Jack.
Speaking of Jack, it was nice to see him back in command of things and acting like a true leader. The same goes for Kate, who nearly shot that guard's knee cap off.

Question...
Posted by Andy Ravens at 2:23 PM | Comments (0)
If I'm lost...will you find me?
I was going to count the number of days it’s been since a new episode of ABC’s “Lost? aired, but, well, I’ll do what the show’s producers do all too often: Leave the answer to a simple question a mystery.
Too many new faces and too many — way too many — unanswered questions have plagued the series, which started to take a nosedive when Season Three began last fall. ABC, hearing criticism that it aired too many re-runs last year, choose to air six new episodes in a “mini fall season? and then another 16 straight starting tonight at 10.
One major problem: Who the hell can remember what’s going on? Ah…leave it to ABC to fill in the gaps tonight at 9 when “Lost? executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse host some kind of re-cap show that will probably help — a little bit.
Sounds like I’m a bit angry about the show’s direction, huh? Well, I’m actually more disappointed because the show got off to such a great start.
Season Two’s first episode thankfully answered what the heck was in The Hatch. But, that answer only brought more questions — which is fine — however; when you raise too many questions that can never possibly be answered in timely fashion — that’s where you’ve got problems — and really long run-on sentences like this one (my apologies to all of my teachers who taught me how to write at West Elementary School in Andover).
I’ll try to be optimistic tonight when I sit down and figure out this puzzle, but one common phrase that’s been running ‘round the Internet will keep buzzing in my head: Jack Bauer would have been off that Island in a second.
Other TV highlights:
“Bones,? 8 p.m., Fox
“Friday Night Lights,? 8 p.m., NBC
“American Idol,? 9 p.m., Fox
“Criminal Minds,? 9 p.m., CBS
“CSI: NY,? 10 p.m., CBS
Movie of the Night:
“Match Point,? 11:55 p.m., HBO

Homer's Oscar Picks
Here's a little promo I got in my e-mail today from the folks who are promoting "The Simpsons Movie."
HOMER SIMPSON'S OSCAR® PICKS
BEST PICTURE: “Little Miss Sunshine.? I just love the idea of a family where the son
can’t talk and the grandfather dies. The feel-good hit of the year!
BEST ACTOR: Forest Whitaker –“The Last King of Scotland.? He didn’t just chew the
scenery, he ate the cast.
BEST ACTRESS: I pick the only one of these ladies who’s a true American–Penelope Cruz.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Mark Wahlberg. I love how at the end of the movie he kills Matt Damon. Whoops, I gave it away.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Sharon Stone–“Basic Instinct II.? Write it in, people.
OUTSTANDING ANIMATED FILM: “The Simpsons Movie.? “Cars? has talking cars, but we have talking people.
BEST SONG: How can you go against the most crowd-pleasing musical ever: “An Inconvenient Truth.?
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: “Jesus Camp.? I always wanted to know what Jesus’s last name was.
BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT: Who cares? Get off my awards show. I want more close-ups of Jack Nicholson laughing.
MOST UNBELIEVABLE SNUB: “Dreamgirls.? I can’t believe this wasn’t up for Best Picture – especially after Eddie Murphy played the parts of all the girls. The only thing missing was the
flatulent, foul-mouthed Granny. Thank God there was a great one in “The Queen.?

Forever "Lost?"
Perhaps “Lost? executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof finally have a clue. After losing viewers to CBS’s average crime drama, “Criminal Minds,? “Lost? will begin airing 16 new episodes at a new time (10 p.m.) on Wednesday.
It’s fairly unprecedented for a popular show to switch timeslots, but when you’re losing a fight you shouldn’t, drastic measures must be taken.
“Lost? lost its audience because it fails to answer the viewer’s most burning questions in a timely fashion. It’s possible to keep suspense and give away a few answers, Mr. Cuse and Mr. Lindelof. Just check out NBC’s “Heroes,? which knows when to give it up and when to hold key plot points just a little longer.
A great story in today’s USA TODAY has “Lost? officials promising more answers. New commercials airing on ABC also offer similar promises. We’ll see.
According to USA TODAY’s piece, we’ll learn: how Locke ended up in a wheelchair; how Jack got his tattoos; Ethan’s story; about Desmond’s premonitions; the effects of the purple sky; and perhaps a glimpse into Desmond’s lost love, Penny’s life.
Penny — if you remember Season Two’s cliffhanger — apparently lives in the outside world and found the island. That subject was ignored in Season Three’s first six episodes. Stupid move.
Attention “Star Wars? and hi-def geeks! Set your DVR’s for Saturday at 2 p.m. on HBO HD because “The Empire Strikes Back? will air. Looks like the original trilogy is making a move from Cinemax (HBO’s sister channel) to HBO. Niceeeee.
Have a good one!

Almost Famous
"School Ties," the major motion picture that was filmed in Lowell, Concord, Acton and Groton in 1992, airs tonight at 6 on HBO and HBO HD. The story of anti-Semitism at a 1950s prep school features several Greater Lowell familiar faces.
Bonus points to anyone who can pick out Sun Lifestyles reporter Nancye Tuttle, who has a cameo. Here's a hint: Pay close attention to any crowd shots during the football game.
Also be on the lookout for local stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The film stars Brendan Fraser.
HBO will re-air "School Ties" on Feb. 5, 8, and 12. Check out The Sun on those days for airtimes.

Andy

Pudding Worthy?
FYI: "Hasty Pudding" awards are given away every year to those who have made a "lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment." Harvard's undergraduate drama troupe hands out the awards, and Ben Stiller and Scarlett Johansson are this year's winners. I'm all for Johansson, but Stiller is a dud. He plays the same character in virtually every movie.

TV Tidbits
A few TV tidbits to pass along:
ABC’s “Big Day? is like a bad car wreck. I know I shouldn’t stare, but I do anyway. The season finale airs tonight at 9.
Dr. House returns tonight at 9 on Fox after a brief stint in rehab.
If you are a “Without a Trace? junkie, check out four straight episodes tonight beginning at 6 on TNT. The show’s star, Anthony LaPaglia, turns 48 tomorrow.
The worst of them all, “Star Wars: Episode I,? airs tonight in HD on HBO at 6:30. The force is not with this one.
This season’s “24? was dangerously close to “jumping the shark? with last night’s “family affair,? episode that smacked afternoon soap opera. Fortunately, Jack’s jerk of a brother turned the tables and the cold-hearted viciousness of the show returned. Would someone please shut up President Palmer’s sister, Sandra? Her annoying rants make me cringe.
Is anyone watching the final season of “Rome? on HBO? I have the first three episodes taped and I haven’t gotten around to watching them yet. I read a couple of bad reviews and that turned me off.
I can’t provide you with a “Heroes? update because I taped it last night and I need to watch it first. Sorry. Here’s what I can tell you: Something likely happened that can’t be fully explained right now, but will be explained shortly. Take note, “Lost,? which returns on Feb. 7 on ABC.
I rented “Saw III? on Sunday. Wow. Pretty bad and gruesome stuff, although they did manage to tie up some loose story ends from the previous two installments. The first “Saw? is still the best. Here’s hoping we are done with Jigsaw, which judging by the end of the film I think we are.

Busy Night for Tubers
"All righhhty then," Ace Ventura, we are officially BACK to new episodes in primetime and there are more DVR’ing decisions to make in tonight’s TV lineup that is LOADED with fresh content. Absolutely loaded, my friends.
Decision No. 1: With Fox’s “Prison Break? finally returning from a long hiatus I’ve got to tune into this at 8 p.m. I’ll record new episodes of “How I Met Your Mother? (8 p.m.) and “The Class? (8:30 p.m.) on CBS.
Decision No. 2: Is this really a no-brainer? I’ve got to catch “24? at 9 p.m. on Fox and DVR the return of NBC’s “Heroes? at 9 p.m. Although, I am thinking about switching that up and DVR’ing “24? because that’s more fun to watch without commercials. Decisions, decisions. Although the “Prison Break? — “24? two-hour block is pretty dirty fresh and missing out on that in real time would be a bummer. Things that make you go “Mmmm.? Yes, this is my life.
And finally, speaking of Mr. Ventura, late night viewers may want to know that “Ave Ventura: When Nature Calls,? airs at 12 a.m. on TBS.

Andy

“The Quigley Poll, conducted every year since 1932, is an annual survey of motion picture exhibitors, which asks them to vote for the ten stars that they believe generated the most box-office revenue in the preceding year for their theatres. Long regarded as one of the most reliable indicators of a Star’s box-office draw because the selections are done by people whose livelihood depends on choosing the films that will bring audiences to their theatres, the Quigley Poll appears annually in Quigley Publishing Company’s International Motion Picture Almanac and at www.quigleypublishing.com.?
