Fall TV

Let’s talk about the upcoming Fall 2006 television season.
There are a ton of new shows slated for this season. Inevitably several will fail, but a few are likely to catch on and (dare I say it) become mega hits.

I’m busily working on my TV preview for The Sun (it is scheduled to appear in the Aug. 25 edition) and a few shows have caught my eye.

Most notably is NBC’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, a new drama from Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing) that stars Matthew Perry, Amanda Peet and Bradley Whitford.

The show is a behind-the-scenes look at a bad late-night sketch comedy series and early reviews sound promising.

Are you excited about any other new shows? Or are you anxiously awaiting an old favorite? Drop me a line.

Any early word on the new show "Jericho"?

Posted by: Craig Sutliff at August 16, 2006 11:31 AM

Hey Craig,
"Jericho" appears to be basically a "Lost" clone. Here's the plot: People living in Kansas witness a gigantic nuclear mushroom cloud on the horizon. Oh my! They are isolated and believe they might be the only survivors of the blast. Chaos, puzzles and drama ensues...

I hope Sorkin takes enough drugs to make his new show as good as the early West Wing shows that he wrote.

What about the new show about the senator's wife who is kidnapped? Is it a one-season show with a beginning, middle and end (like "24") or will they be searching for her for years?

Hey good luck buddy....

Any thoughts about the new "The Real OC" set to debut on MTV?

Has anyone seen this ridiculous premise called "Ugly Betty"? Come on, I'm supposed to believe Salma Hayek is ugly? Yeah, okay. Even when she played a "uni-browed" woman she still looked like herself. Is this a comedy version of the Ugly-Swan reality show? (That makeover show for UGLY woman...who..were...not...even...that...ulgy)

I am patiently awaiting the return of NIP/TUCK... the show is amazing and it has been a long summer without it.

Karl — "Ugly Betty" is produced by Salma Hayek, she does not star in the show. But you are right — it would be pretty hard to make her appear ugly.

Joan — There is a lot of speculation on the show you refer to, "Vanished" (FOX, Mondays, 9 p.m.). My guess, assuming people tune in, she will likely be found, but that will only lead to bigger puzzles and questions. That way, producers can extend the life of the show, in the same fashion as "Prison Break."

What's the deal with all these HS Football shows? Any reports yet?

Posted by: Mike T at August 16, 2006 3:36 PM

I'm looking forward to NBC's "Heroes" and ABC's "The Nine". Plus "Desperate Housewives" is back and my all time favorite "Lost" returns with a few new cast members on the island. What has happened to Locke and Mr. Echo in the tunnel? Will Jack, Kate and Sawyer be rescued from the "Others"? What's with the 4 toed statue? Will Hurley finally lose some weight? BTW..."Ugly Bettie" is an American remake of a Spanish novella called "Yo soy Betty La Fea". It's about an ugly girl who starts working for a fashion/modeling agency. It wont last.

Hey Carlos,
Thanks for providing us further background about "Ugly Bettie."

I've got many of the same questions about "Lost," and show producers are tight-lipped.

I did see one interview where producers said they would shy away from the mythology angle this season and concentrate more on action/adventure and romance on the island. We'll see how that works out with the show's dedicated fan base.

Mike T, what's the problem with all of the HS football shows? Football, chicks, party, beer, high school was the best, I wanna go back. Nib High football rules.

When does Prison Break come back.. I just gotta see how they get away from that situation they were in at the cliffhanger ending of last season.

Hopefully, this show will keep us busy until Jack Bauer returns in January.

Do you think the "serial dramas" are going to continue to be the best shows in the coming seasons, or will they fade out because people just dont want to commit to watching a show every week?

Does anyone know what the name of the show is that stars the guy from "Office Space"? I saw a commercial for the show and can't remember the name...

Posted by: Lost in Translation at August 18, 2006 8:34 AM

T Brady — Prison Break returns this Monday (Aug 21) on FOX! And I do think "serial dramas" will continue to rule until the networks put together a decent slate of sitcoms.

Shawn — The show you are referring to is "Standoff," which stars Office Space's Ron Livingston, who plays an FBI agent. It debuts Sept. 5 at 9 p.m. on FOX.

Well incase you haven't seen the numbers yet Ugly Bettie was seen by 16.5 million viewers which makes it the most watch show so far this season. I felt the same way when it first was viewed in the spanish network but now well just give it a try it will surprise you.
