DRUG TESTING: About the two firefighters killed while under the influence of alcohol and drugs: It's an awful thing to say, but any benefits due these two men should not be given to the family. Surprise drug testing should also be done.

TOO LENIENT: Luis Negron's punishment of 90 days was not harsh enough; he should've got a minimum of two years. The judge was right on one thing -- he will get mental health counseling because he's got problems.

GREAT WRITING: About the op-ed column by Bob Reed on Oct. 2: I hope everybody read, "Death, Here and There." It is an enlightening and very good column.

SUPPORT SAMARAS: I am very strongly watching the Lowell School Committee and possible mayoral candidates running for City Council, to see who supports Headmaster Bill Samaras and who doesn't. I have every reason to want to elect only people who will give Samaras an extension to his contract. He is the right man for Lowell High School.

DON'T DO IT: Regarding the article about Dracut giving 13 acres to Lowell: It's ridiculous. There are so many houses for sale that haven't sold. The only one who will make money is the builder. The schools and town will suffer the consequences.

JUST SAY NO: The state forest is there for a reason. It was never meant to be subdivided. Totman Road between Lowell and Dracut is a fire road. Dracut, just say no, don't do it.

OUT OF IRAQ: I won't vote for Jim Ogonowski because he doesn't want us to leave Iraq until it's safe and secure. Iraq will never be safe and secure.

SAME OLD NAMES: I'd like to see new names in Washington, D.C. I'm not voting for anybody named Clinton, Tsongas, Kennedy or Bush, if another one ever runs.

STOP CALLING: The elections are coming up, and the phone calls have started up again. I thought voting information was private, and it should be kept that way. It would be a great service if you could print the phone numbers for Ogonowski and Tsongas so we could tell them to stop calling our homes during dinnertime.

OVERKILL: I think I know why Westford's taxes are so high. They have too many police on the force. I noticed during the day there were two police officers looking for speeders within a half-mile of each other.
