This one has been keeping me up nights. But a choice has finally been made and I have come to a conclusion. Of all the music I have heard in the last year by unsigned artists and bands currently under the radar of mainstream radio, all the CD's and MP3's sent to me by bands and performers literally from Maine to Hawaii , and all the acts I have had the pleasure of meeting, seeing, and hearing over the last 12 months, I have finally chosen one as; "The Audio Floss Best CD of 2009"
The CD and the Band is called Flying Machines which features four incredibly talented musicians that have literally hit a high note with their debut release. Front man and keyboard player William George, Guitarist John Wlaysewski, Drummer Ken Weisbach, and Bass player Evan Joyce have brilliantly come together with 10 tracks reminiscent of hard rock 70's glam fused with a modern day post grunge pop sound destined for commercial success. And as the name of the band and the CD indicates the music seems to fly and at times soar with an edge, a sound, and a style that is all their own. But It's actually the rapid changes and mild distortion of Wlaysewski guitar play and George's vocal styling on many of the tracks which features an almost Queen like vibe to it and an operatic feel that is incredibly similar to the late great Freddy Mercury that gives Flying Machines all it's upward momentum. Try track 7 "Patterns" if one needs convincing.
Although, not totally on board with the notion that the CD can be completely categorized in the hard rock genre. The music of Flying Machines is certainly enough to push it in that direction. And the disc does qualify itself by demonstrating a clear case that it just might be by offering up to its listeners the obligatory power ballad most associated with the genre'. . And track 4 on the CD "I Don't Remember Why" is certainly that, a beautiful slow moving piece that not only builds to its last sustaining notes but also centers completely on the vocals of William George. If there is a breakout hit on the CD, track 4 is most certainly one of them.
The CD hit the street on September 22nd and is available at all the usual hot spots for the 21st century web savvy music lover.
