The 119 Gallery on Chelmsford St. in Lowell has live music events on occasion, but Director Walter Wright and Music Director Dan Adam seem to be ramping things up as of late. This week, there are three shows on tap, all of them experimental in nature. For a change of pace, check out one of these brow-raising performances.
Thursday, May 15 / 8 p.m. – 11 p.m.
It’s an International Noise Attack, with a bursting earful of bands in town from all over the world. For a $10 donation, you can check out the following acts:
The Rita (Canada)
Sewer Election (Sweden)
Oscillating Innards (California)
Ichorous (Massachusetts)
Gasmask (New Hampshire)
Sudden Infant (Germany)
Kakerlak (Baltimore)
Work/Death (Providence)
If you’ve never experienced the detonating power of a live noise band, I strongly encourage you to visit the MySpace page of any of the above bands and preview some music before heading to the show. Trust me – it’s for your own safety.
Friday, May 16 / 8 p.m. – 11 p.m.
Spiral7 and Cilla Vee – Life Arts will present a multi-dimensional performance called “That From Which.” It will be movement, music and projections with these folks:
Claire Elizabeth Barratt – Movement
Philip Lampe – Processed Sitar, Touch Guitar Synth, Laptop
Glenn Dickson – Clarinet, Electronics
Grant Smith – Hand Percussion, Electronics
According to 119’s web site, “That From Which” is an abstract exploration on the theme of hope, the process that leads to it, and that which enables us to go beyond it.

Saturday, May 17 / 8 p.m. – 11 p.m.
John Voigt on bass and poetry and Walter Wright on analog synth, video, and laptop will interpret the poetry of way-ahead-of-his-time free jazz musician and self-proclaimed Saturn native Sun Ra. The poetry will be interpreted with music from Saturn’s moon Enceladus and video from Sun Ra’s 1974 concert at Axis-in-Soho.
This one is sure to be unlike anything you’ve seen and/or heard before, and you get to take the trip for a $10 donation.
